Is it worth watching?
IMO yes it is even if you know the event in history it's based on.
I feel it's an excellent interpretation and Gerard Butler as Leonidas did exceptional work, actually all the actors did.
Frankly the look of the film is worth it's viewing.
Larry Fong is the cinematographer and the director Zack Snyder teamed to create a very different visual effect throughout.
Fong pioneered it and calls the technique, "the Crush", basically highlights/shadow are manipulated in such a way to create that "other-worldly", or however you would describe the unique look of the film, and I feel it works quite well creating the landscape of this epic that is presented.

I watched it in the theatre expecting a "Gladiator" or "Braveheart" type movie and was really disapointed. I watched it again at home and knew what it was "a special effects war movie" and it was pretty good.

Why I don't like the second one. It had lost that effect, seemed like a lot of very noticeable cgi. Maybe they were too far spaced out
They didn't use the same "Crush' effect on the second film, that technique was created and used on the first to give the film its unique look.
Probably because the second film had a different director and cinematographer.
300- Zack Snyder director, Larry Fong cinematographer
300 Rise of an Empire- Noam Murro director, Simon Duggan cinematographer

Worth watching? Yes.
Good movie? No.
First time I watched it I loved it. Thought it was masterful. Second time I saw it I realized that I was overcome with excitement and how cool the movie looked and how I had just read the comic and all that when I first saw it. After that, I realized it's a pretty thin, plodding mess with more style than substance and after a while, even the style gets old.
But I fricking hate Zack Snyder's movies. Except for Watchmen, I think he is a pretty poor director in everything else he's done.

Loved it. I'll watch it anytime I'm surfing and it's on.
Like previously said, the speech at the end was epic.

I think it's pretty awesome. It looks awesome, and the acting is pretty solid. And obviously the cinematography is great...its a gorgeous movie.
And Lena Heady is fine as frick (and gets naked ).
It might be a little overrated, but I really like it a lot.

Watch in dark room with surround sound blasting.

Yeah the soundtrack has an "epicness" that fits the film well.

The whole thing was much larger than life, and pulled that off pretty well. It wasn't supposed to be a deep, subtle look into the culture of Sparta or anything. I enjoyed it.

"Thin", hmm,
This is Sparta, as in:
Spartan
Also, Spartanic [spahr-tan-ik] (Show IPA).
1. of or relating to Sparta or its people.
2.suggestive of the ancient Spartans; sternly disciplined and rigorously simple, frugal, or austere.
3.brave; undaunted.
Didn't read the "comic" book just history classes, so I'm not sure how you would "fill out" an epic which is by definition:
epic; noting or pertaining to a long poetic composition , usually centered upon a hero, in which a series of great achievements or events is narrated in elevated style:

It was kind of cool at the time. I found it a little ridiculous that the Spartans were portrayed as sons of liberty and wore only loincloths and capes into battle. I've tried to watch it on TV a few times and it just isn't that interesting.
