Warner Bros. has set a date for Wonka, an origin story focusing on the storied chocolate factory owner.
Wonka will hit theaters on March 17, 2023 and is from Paddington director Paul King and Harry Potter producer David Heyman. The studio describes it as focusing on "a young Willy Wonka and his adventures prior to opening the world’s most famous chocolate factory."

Everything is a prequel, sequel or franchise film in Hollywood these days. I know they are more of a sure thing to make money but come on. I would like to see something new every once in a while.

There's tons of new stuff every year, audiences just don't show up to watch them. That's the problem.

Good track record here. I’m in so far.

seriously, someone like James Franco could do this type of role well. He is quirky, has a similar look that looks like he could grow into Depp.

It will probably conflict with the James Bond shooting schedule.
I could actually see Donald Glover pulling off a young Willie Wonka.

Dear god. I don’t want this at all, but if it has to happen, why make it a prequel to the Johnny Depp version?

They should probably try writing a good story and committing finance to the marketing.
Like Ex Machina, Whiplash, The Nice Guys, just to name a few.

The best “original” stuff gets released during awards season. While hoping for some box office success, the producers are banking on nomination-based word of mouth to propel the movie either during wide release in January or during home video/streaming release.
The only problem is that none of this stuff appeals to people who want both originality AND a good popcorn flick.
Studios want to clear $300 million to $1 billion in profit on their big summer releases, so summer movies will continue to be big franchises, hence more remakes, sequels, and prequels.
Take for example The Nice Guys. Good solid, original movie. Was released in late May 2016, during the start of the summer season. When theater take and marketing costs are taken into account, it lost money at the box office.
