Not in movies, but Mister Sinister, Apocalypse, and Fabian Cortez are pretty much assholes.

Of those I don't believe have been mentioned:

Sgt Barnes from Platoon

Hans Landa from Inglorious Basterds

I don't want to get into a big debate or discussion about it, but i'll still say Michael was the villain based off of this criteria - Villain - One who shows cruel and evil intent, often having a depraved, vile, or criminal character, with major disregard for the well-being of others.

Most website classify the movie villain as the above definition, so to me Michael would fit the role of villain. He may be a likeable character but his actions speak differently. The film makes you want to like him and his attitude and actions, much like Tony Soprano. We routed for him instead of against him because we were pushed that way even though his actions should have pushed us the other way.
Not saying this is how everyone felt, just my own opinion.

to me its not about being likeable or good vs evil. I agree that he shows cruel and evil intent and obviously he is a criminal.

Its simply protagonist vs antogonist. Michael is clearly the protagonist of the story and the protagonist can not be the villain. Not all antoganist are villains, but all villains are antongists.

I don't "like" either of those guys to be honest. I was rooting for the FBI to nail Tony, he's scumbag and if he was shot in front of family good. But, that shows me they are both the protagonists, which to me means they can't be the villains. Barzini, Roth and NY Mob are the villains

His back story would make for a great opening scene.

I see what you are saying about protagonist vs antagonist, but how can Barzini, NY Mob, Roth be villains but not Michael even though they are all doing the same things. Michael simply being the main character cannot warrant him being above the label of villain.

From wiki - Although the protagonist is often referred to as the "good guy", it is entirely possible for a story's protagonist to be the clear villain, or antihero, of the piece

He's evil or at least "bad" character, its just imo the protagonist can not be the villain. Souns like hairsplitting, but I'll put it this way. The protagonist can be A villain, not The Villain, if that makes sense

The villain to me is the or an antoganist, though not all antogonists are villains and not all protagonists are good.

That's why when I list villains, I stick with the clear cut, classic archetype.

Austin Powers - Protagonist/Hero

Dr Evil - Antogonist/Villain.

Interesting debate though. Like I said we had this a while back and basically we are both right.

There are villain-protagonists.

There have been villains who are the center/move the story - obvious examples - Natural Born Killers, American Psycho, Let the Right One In.

It can be argued that Michael is the villain-protagonist (I don't think he is) similar to how Daniel Plainview is labeled the villain-protagonist in There Will Be Blood or Michael Douglas in Falling Down (Society is the villain dammit! )

AFI lists Michael Corleone and Travis Bickle as top iconic villains...I think they're wrong like their choice of Hannibal Lechter from Silence (the other movies - maybe, but not Silence.)

But there are movies where the guy moving the story along at its center is a villain.

I'd argue they are evil or bad, but not the villain per se.
