A little while ago we got our regularly scheduled "did dottie drop it on purpose" chat, but it's been a while since I've seen the usual US chat.

IYO, is the movie invalidated/made worse by the fact that the whole movie is basically made up? Personally, I love the movie and it's probably one of my 10 favorites ever. However, there are some on this board that vehemently state that the movie is worthless because at the end we find out that basically everything we just saw up to that point was just a tale being told by Verbal. Thoughts?

I don't see the problem.

I don't either, but for some reason some people are seriously put off by it. I wanted to get their take.

I don't think the whole movie is "made up".

It shows what happened, although only hiding Verbal's role in events.

Every movie is "made up" its story telling. Who cares who tells the story, the story is great regardless

Usual?

I've never seen this movie. And the reason is because my old roommate ruined the ending for me (on accident). I know it would still be pretty good, but knowing how it ends really takes a lot away from me wanting to ever sit down and watch it.

Dammit cokes you know what I meant, it's still early.

And you should watch it, it's not too long and it's a movie you'll probably be glad you watched. I feel like everyone in the world had the ending of 6th sense spoiled for them if you didn't watch it in the first week it came out, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

I don't think all of what he told him was made up. Kobayashi was a made up name for a guy we find out was real. In the context of what we see on the screen, all of it could have happened that way with Soze watching it all unfold, like with him shooting the drug dealer in cold blood during the robbery. That was totally out of left field for Verbal, but makes sense when you realize who he actually is. Dean Keaton's gf was found dead, confirmed by Kujan. So yeah, I think names and "conversation filler" were taken from what he saw in the office, but everything that Verbal/Soze told Kujan during the interview did happen.

The ending isnt what makes the movie great

Its so engrained in pop culture that pretty much anyone that watches it now knows the ending (i did when i watched it) but its great

I stupidly ruined it for a friend when I told him that Spacey won an Oscar for that role when the movie first started.

Ah - but was it all "made up"?

We know that Verbal was taking proper names from the objects in the room, but many of the events of the film actually took place. The great thing about rewatching is to try to figure out what was factually based and what Verbal was lying about to protect himself, his organization and the "lies", themselves, and particularly his reputation, which is his greatest weapon.

My roommate said something when we were watching Scary Movie. At the end Doofy goes from retarded to cool, he was like "Hahaa...they riffed on The Usual Suspects." When I was like "?" he felt like shite.

Exactly. The fact that the ending was left somewhat ambiguous is what made the ending so good.

I'm a sucker for movies about writing/storytelling, and that's what this is. I like that it is one big story made up by a gifted mythmaker.

Print the legend. It doesn't matter if its true because its true now. It's the only story we have.
