Just saw it on a whim. It wasn’t terrible. Better than The Eternals. Better than I thought it would be. It wasn’t the best ever, but it was pretty good.

Much like Solo getting punished for the sins of Rian Johnson’s abortion of a SW movie, this movie is the bill coming due on all kinds of frickups Marvel has made since Endgame.

This doesn’t look like a GOOD movie by any means but it is going to take the financial hit because of timing. Does not help at all that a lot of the decisions going into this film were representative of all the frickups by Marvel in Phase 4.

Not sure about the MCU version but the comic version was a major Carol fan girl before she got her powers.

EXCLUSIVE, updated: Marvel Studios‘ sequel, The Marvels, has clocked around $6.5M in Thursday night previews we hear from sources. Disney called the night at $6.6M for showtimes that began at 3PM yesterday.

fear out there by many is that this $200M budgeted sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel –which stands as the highest grossing female superhero movie of all-time–could clock the lowest start ever stateside for a Marvel Studios movie; lower than The Incredible Hulk (which was a Universal release before Disney absorbed the MCU) which had a $55.4M start. While tracking took its projections down from $80M to $60M for The Marvels, there is a concern out there that The Marvels could see a $40M+ start.

At $6.5M that’s one of the lower previews we’ve seen in recent times from Marvel, just one notch above Ant-Man ($6.4M, $57.2M) and lower than Disney November misfires The Eternals ($9.5M previews, $71.2M opening) and Thor: Dark World ($7.1M previews, $85.7M). The Incredible Hulk has the lowest previews of $2M for an MCU title in the preview era, but that’s when previews began at midnight.

Thursday night PostTrak exits from ComScore/Screen Engine were severe for general audiences at 3.5 stars, but 4 1/2 stars from parents and 5 stars from kids under 12. That said, kids and parents combined only repped 9% of last night’s audience. The Marvels skewed guys at 63% with men over 25 the biggest turnout at 45% and women over 25 at 24%. That latter demo gave the best recommendation grades of any demo at 61%.

Ain't no way this movie is less than $250 million with all the reshoots.

Hulk was not only pre-Marvel absorption into Disney, it was also about 15+ years ago.

Inflation alone should mean this movie draw far more than that, so underperforming one of the first movies in the whole franchise is pretty damn bad.

They can fudge the numbers, I’m sure, to try and pretend it cost less than it did.

Until it flops and they need it to be much more bloated for tax purposes.

This is what Forbes reported earlier this year

quote:

The budget for The Marvels is around $270 million according to a report from Forbes, making it the fourth most-expensive MCU movie and the highest budget for a non-Avengers film. Comparing the sequel to its predecessor, Captain Marvel had a budget of around $175 million. The Marvels was originally reported to have a budget of $130 million, which would’ve made it one of the least-expensive MCU films to make. However, the updated budget more appropriately reflects the film’s ensemble cast and VFX-focused nature.

The Marvels was mostly filmed in studios just outside of London thanks to the United Kingdom’s Film Tax Relief. The UK government offers a cash rebate of up to 25% for qualifying film productions, which Marvel Studios took advantage of with The Marvels. Although big-budget films like MCU films aren’t usually so open with their financial numbers, studios are usually more accepting of the disclosure for the sake of the money earned back. Disney received $55 million back from The Marvels’ subsidy, lowering the production’s average spending to around $219 million.

So many soy boys out there. How many neck beards and fedoras in the audience? The older demo and low numbers should be very troubling for Disney.

Reportedly, she says something to the effect of “captain, oh my captain“ during the movie. With an adoring glance, or something to that effect.

Fangirling over a superhero I get. But the writing is just ridiculous.

This has all the earmarks of a silly D+ after school special and not a Marvel theatrical movie.

That is a bad choice of character to use in the film then rather than bad writing.

Kamala Khan is basically a “keet” hyperactive fangirl / neophyte superhero. She’s kind of a distaff counterpart to Spider-Man considering she is a Muslim living in Satan’s a-hole, New Jersey, who is learning to be a superhero as she goes along.

If they want a film with gravitas, it probably isn’t going to be one with Kamala playing a big part. This is partly why the trope “shoo the clowns out” exists, as the goofy character needs to disappear for a while when the tone gets more serious.

But they don't. They told us specifically that THIS movie was going to be unlike allll the other MCU content, and be whacky, fun, and colorful!

So what of The Guardians of the Galaxy? Thor Ragnarök or Thor Love and Thunder? Or She-Hulk?

Not only do these people not know comics, but they also don't even follow their own recent history!

IOW, they are letting the inmates run the asylum like Kathleen Kennedy did with Star Wars.

You don’t have to be completely beholden to the comics as written in stone, but mining them for ideas seems like a good fricking plan.

Them doing this would be like me writing a movie about Wayne Gretzky then changing him from the best hockey player ever to a guy struggling to play lacrosse because that’s what I want to do and I don’t have any source material to use as a guideline.

I enjoyed the movie. It wasn't great, and I zoned out during the musical section. But overall enjoyed. 6 of 10 for me. About on par with Quantumania. Way better than Eternals, but that's not saying much.

She 100% is still a super fan in the MCU.

Her room is covered in Avengers decoration, especially Captain Marvel. And she enters into a costume contest dressed as Captain Marvel.

Denying there wasn’t any material isn’t the same as choosing to not follow it.

She outright lied to give herself cover. She always wanted to bury old Star Wars and create her own new stuff because she’s that petty and didn’t want to pay Lucas any money for his trademark ideas.
