Andy wasn't the gee shucks nice guy he portrayed, either.

On Babylon 5, Jerry Doyle (Security Chief Michael Garibaldi) did not like Michael O'Hare (Commander Jeffrey Sinclair) during the first season. Doyle thought O'Hare was unprofessional, aloof, and acting like a jerk to the rest of the cast.
The truth was that O'Hare had started suffering from paranoid delusions. Showrunner J Michael Strazinsky was one of the few people that knew, but O'Hare insisted that he finish the season and then write his character off. That way, the other actors' jobs would be safe, and O'Hare could then seek treatment. This also explained why O'Hare sometimes seemed to struggle through some wooden acting.
Unfortunately, O'Hare eventually had relapses that led to his early death. Strazinski kept the medical issues secret until O'Hare's death, then he let people know the truth as per O'Hare's wishes.

Most of the cast was miserable. It took 20-50 hours of filming to get one episode. The set was a mess of trenches and trap doors for the puppeteers, so the cast had to constantly watch their stop.
The creator of Alf was also crazy and obsessed with the notion of maintaining the illusion that Alf was a real alien. That lead to even more on set stress and tension.
