I highly encourage everyone to go watch the very opening shot of episode 1.

I saw your posts in the other threads on this obvious spoiler and chose not to respond to the initial post. I personally think you should edit them, especially the second post. I don’t think you’re going to get the reaction you expect even if the dim bulb you are trying to outshine finally figures it out.

Just so you know:
In medieval Europe, owls had a bad name; a symbol of witchcraft involved in the secret powers of the night, which is in sharp contrast to our symbol of knowledge and education commonly associated with the owl. To hear the hoot of an owl presages imminent death. So go listen as well.

I didn't get that idea about the opening shot of the pilot from any other site. I literally studied every scene from I over and over and it caught my eye last week.

episode 6 through 8 short synopses

Very cool snips that give us a direction of where this heads...pretty much confirms the Tuttle family involvement in the killings.also implies the rift between Marty and rust is real and not a public show...hence them "calling a truce"
Can't wait.

The colors of Mardi Gras are Purple, Green, and Gold. Aside from these three dominant colors, all other colors can be considered neutral. Symbolically, Purple is the color of good judgment, Green is the color of nature or fertility (life) and Gold symbolizes wealth. For Mardi Gras, Purple represents Justice, green represents faith, and Gold represents Power.

The True Detective theme incorporates the idea that rich and powerful men who participate in the rituals of Cajun Mardi Gras may have other secret rituals as well. When you see certain key characters the author clues you (and Rust) in with color. Rust has Psycho Synesthesia and he either smells or tastes colors. It’s his form of ESP. His eccentricities are described in the legends/stories about Cthulhu (mostly in the Lovecraft stories and I’m not sure about Chambers’ version). The Yellow King isn’t necessarily the leader of the cult but may be the evil spirit the cultists are trying to revive using sacrifices. They mark the sacrificial women and probably children (their angels) with a SPIRAL brand/tattoo. The True Detective story probably can’t stay true to the Cthulhu stories, because I doubt an octopus headed cephalopod Yellow King is going to appear. Reggie is as close as it gets with his gas mask respirator (or maybe the Tall Man/spaghetti monster). *(edit)* I just realized that only 4 of the Cajun Mardi Gras horsemen wear the pointed hats. The 5th has a mask that may represent the Yellow King. When Rev Tuttle dies in 2010, the cult keeps going strong. Reggie Ledoux died in 1995 and they still have meth and LSD. Maybe Jimmy Ledoux gets passed the family torch. The premise is you can’t just kill the cult leaders or members and stop the cycle. As far as the idea about having 5 kings, I have no idea except that Reggie had a pentagram (5 points) tattoo on his back and he was under the Cthulhu cult/influence.

Examples of color:
Rev Tuttle wears a gold hankie in an opening episode and goes to a yellow tie and hankie in an upcoming episode.

Mrs. Kelly wears a purple sweater. In her photos, Dora wears green in the younger photo and purple in the Cajun Mardi Gras photo.

Maggie Hart frequently wears green and sometimes purple.

Maisie Hart frequently wears green and sometimes purple. Her tiara has all three colors but Audrey takes it away from her.

Audrey Hart wears yellow (or black). When the girls are playing in their room depicting a rape scene / gang bang ritual, the carpet is gold and the walls are yellow. Some rooms in their house are yellow. In later scenes, Audrey wears yellow while Maisie wears purple.

Rust tends to wear neutral colors or purple/green shirts. I haven’t noticed any yellow.

The prost Rust gets his pills from stays in a yellow motel room. The other prosts don’t seem to be directly associated with the cult.

When Marty interviews Danny Fontenot, he wears a gold patterned tie. When they eat at a roadside stand, it’s yellow and purple. I assume it stands for Marty and Rust. (Mostly, Marty just wears whatever he had on the previous night.) So why did they use a Pink Floyd T shirt as their symbol for Marty? Best Narco get-up ever.

Nothing is obvious on Marty’s father-in-law.

Lisa Tragnetti wears purple in her first meeting with Marty, but her apartment is yellow.

Pastor Theriot sent out yellow religious flyers. He doesn’t openly appear to wear yellow. I don’t see him as part of the cult. He did have the Light of the Way/Tuttle connection but I don’t think Ms. Dupre got to him in the coat room closet. When this is all over, I want to learn to dance like him.

As far as who’s good and evil, Marty and Rust ARE bad men but they kill other bad men. They break the law “with impunity”. If Marty turned his daughter out, then he’s a cult member. If the father-in-law or school got to her, then Marty’s just a bad father.

You can claim it's south La and these colors predominate, but the significance is who wears what colors. The series ends up March 9. Mardi Gras is March 4. Maybe Rex is the Yellow King resurrected by all their sacrifices. Lots of good killin’.

Potentially a Major clue here: in a recent interview the director Cary Fukunage mentioned that they were really meticulous about the cars, cop cars of different eras appearing at the right time throughout the show….then he mentioned there is even an 1963 Ford truck, F-100 that appears in Episode 3 then reappears in the final two episodes….that truck is actually the director's own truck….

some people on reddit did some looking and guess what?

f-100

no big shock but if all but confirms the lawn mower man's involvement in the abductions/killings on some level

Not sure I believe the Marty is guilty of these murders theories.

I think Rev. Tuttle, Rev. Eli, and the Gardener at the school are 3 of the 5 headed demon spawn.

Reggie Ledoux is another.

That leaves one more......... (Marty? Governor? State Police Colonel? unknown?) My money is on the Sheriff that was protecting the Bunny Ranch down south.

What would a potential organizational chart look like for the "Cult of the Yellow King"?

Rev Tuttle - Leader

Rev. Eli - Recruitment / membership

Reggie Ledoux - Financial / Fundraising

The Gardener - Operations / volunteer coordinator (someone has to stage THE BODIES)

Xxxxx - Protection, this is where it gets interesting. Hart? LSP Colonel? Governor? Parish Sheriffs?

Where does Maggie's father fit in?

The cult needs a state police presence to get rid of the info on files of missing women and children. That could imply Marty, but I think it will be Steve (Rummy) Geraci. He doesn't cooperate in the investigation and shows open contempt toward Rust.

They have to have an enforcer ... the tall man / lawn mower man. He seems to be in the Light of the Way class picture.

They need their drug czar to supply LSD and meth. That's probably Miles who is definitely higher up the ladder than Reggie. IMDB has a Jimmy Ledoux character listed, but some of that stuff isn't official and can be inaccurate.

Then they need the religious fanatics. Definitely Rev Tuttle, maybe Pastor Theriot, maybe the gov, and maybe the father-in-law.

There will be other lesser cult members. I remember that a previous Sheriff was named Childress, and the deputy Rust wanted files on was also a Childress.

Whether he's a cult member or not, one of Marty's daughters gets sacrificed. I can see this either way ... sweet and innocent or raunchy and nasty. Maybe both. Anxiously awaiting the gang bang ritual.

I'm not trying to sidetrack any theories, but just a reminder of one of the first things Rust said about the killer being a metapsychotic:

Metapsychosis - The supposed action of one mind upon another without any known physical means of communication, or its effect. See psychosis and telepathy.

Meta – Later in time; at a later stage of development

Psychosis – a Mental state involving loss of contact with reality.
Possible Symptoms
Hallucinations
Delusions
Catatonia
Thought Disorders

Possible Causes
Psycho Active Drugs
LSD, methamphetamine
Alcohol

Sound like anybody we know? So, the 2012 detectives are looking at Rust because?

I know Pizzolato says there are no curve balls ... just an action-packed thrill ride. Still, it seems like the story is packed with heavy-duty symbolism and there may be more side-tracks to get lost on than straight paths. Besides, he wears a purple shirt in one of his interviews.
