This is certainly a possibility, but it doesn't clear up some points. I would have thought the governor was covering up for his crazy cousin using the task force to derail the investigation. Damn, now Rev Tuttle probably won't do the "I have sinned" speech.
Why are some murders elaborate ritual displays, but others not? Who knows? Maybe Dora got the lucky bean in her king cake and was the Queen of the Twelfth Night celebration. If so, they probably should have left her tied up till January 5th.
What is Rust's relation to Maggie? Their conversations just aren't simple interactions. Why is the "first meeting" at dinner a key element. I don't think it's just character building ... there has to be some history there.
If Ledoux makes drugs exclusively for the biker gang, how does that fit into rich and powerful cultists?
If Maggie grew up in this culture of abuse, why hasn't she come forward earlier? So, is it her dad or the school or both?
You gotta love a progressive Louisiana school that teaches advanced arts and crafts and hands on sex education too.

no way to know if that theory is accurate but it makes a lot of sense to me…I think back to that original quote from Rust talking about contemplating the scene in the garden when Jesus allows himself to willingly be crucified….maybe he has to kill the governor knowing he will be killed in the processs.

HBO preview ep 5
this one somehow got overlooked but it shows a couple of quick shots that other previews haven't showed…it shows reggie walking through his house from behind and shows his tattoo on his back. shows Marty pulling his gun and then a very quick shot of what looks like some kids on a dirty mattress in Reggie's garage…also snippet of 2012 Rust in the interrogation room telling the detectives "how many times have we had this conversation and nothing ever happens"

From Lovecraft's short story The Call of Cthulhu:
Reggie is the scary octopus monster (the green-eared spaghetti monster). The kids in the woods and the raid on the meth lab all play out in 1995, but the 2012 story still has to develop into the conspiracy with multiple people involved.
Lovecraft's short story, "The Call of Cthulhu" has many of the same elements ... a monster, Louisiana Voodoo, sacrificial rituals in the swamp etc. There are lots of Cthulhu references interspersed thru this story.
Remember when Rust says in 30 years, this place will be under water?
Another one:
Another feature is that you can't really kill the monster, it just keeps reincarnating itself.
I guess the background isn't necessary to follow the story, but it makes for a more powerful telling.
Lovecraft
This isn't really spoiler stuff, but I'm thru with posting in the other thread.

Above these apparent hieroglyphics was a figure of evident pictorial intent, though its impressionistic execution forbade a very clear idea of its nature. It seemed to be a sort of monster, or symbol representing a monster, of a form which only a diseased fancy could conceive. If I say that my somewhat extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature, I shall not be unfaithful to the spirit of the thing. A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings; but it was the general outline of the whole which made it most shockingly frightful. Behind the figure was a vague suggestions of a Cyclopean architectural background.

Another one:
quote:Evidently, it's his version of Rust.
Wilcox was a precocious youth of known genius but great eccentricity, and had from chidhood excited attention through the strange stories and odd dreams he was in the habit of relating. He called himself "psychically hypersensitive", but the staid folk of the ancient commercial city dismissed him as merely "queer." Never mingling much with his kind, he had dropped gradually from social visibility, and was now known only to a small group of esthetes from other towns.

One foreboding omen is the spoiler scene with the oak tree having the hollow encircled in vines (great symbolism). It's got to be for tiny bodies, right?
I didn't look at earlier Carcosa literature with the King in Yellow because Lovecraft's short story matches up fairly well and the earlier writing is far more cryptic.
Also, It's up for grabs, but I say Reggie gets shived in the jail cell.

I think reggie Gets Executed On His Property And Charlie Dies In His cell...
Another thing I have been thinking about is when rust has his visions ...is it when he may actually be physically close to where this evil stuff is taking place or close to children of the king??? I think he really does have some sort of sixth sense...my only question now I'd will they go full love craft and have an actual monster appear at some point??? Has rust seen it?

They showed a scene where Reggie is already in hand-cuffs and on the ground. It would have to be someone else that decided to take him out. Charlie probably already said everything he knew so it lessens the need to kill him. Also, remember that (probably) Guy Francis shows up in the jail also.
Rust is "psychically hypersensitive" (Lovecraft) or has "Psycho Synesthesia" (True Detective). So, like Marty said, maybe Rust can just use his nose to find the bunny ranch.
I also laughed pretty hard thru that scene because Marty kept smelling his fingers.

just because they have him cuffed on the ground doesn't mean they don't execute him. Rust has done it before. they could have seen what was going on when they find the kids and kill the sick son of a bitch. Rust has shown he is willing to defy the law to serve a higher moral good (like killing the guy who injected his kid with meth)
I think its possible there was no "shootout" in the woods where they carried the kids out and they are covering the fact they executed him.there is one picture out there showing Rust and Cohle walking off the property each carrying a young girl in their arms…its pretty clear they went on the property by themselves without backup. They would not be walking way back to their cars through the field and leave the prisoner cuffed on the ground without being watched at gunpoint by someone. He gone die,
as for Guy Francis, maybe he its he dude who kills Charlie in prison?

I thought both the aunt and the missing girl are named Marie Fontenot?
It was brought up earlier that the woman listed on imdb was the missing girl grown up.
