Regardless of how the plot turns out, I dare say the presentation will be effective. I just don't see how it could be terrible. The show is just much less twisted than we might have suspected. The key is the development of characters. True Detective has reinvented itself several times in the first 7 episodes. There are many layers that could be explored but fall by the wayside because they are not essential to the story.

I agree. Anyone that says they didn't like this show based on the ending, whatever it may be, have missed out on the bigger picture. Think about classic literature: shite is analyzed for centuries following first publication, and I guarantee you that those authors did not mean for that to happen. It is the result of great writing that allows for the audience to continuously, and in some cases eternally, dissect the tiniest fragments and extrapolate on their possible meanings and purposes.
