Top Gun Maverick vs Avatar Way of Water Domestic Box Office

Avatar had a larger opening weekend and was ahead of Top Gun up until last weekend comparing number of days at the box office.
Top Gun passed Avatar up last weekend on day 78 and is currently $5 mil ahead at the same time point and I'm guessing Avatar won't ever catch Top Gun domestically.
Interesting to compare as I know Top Gun Maverick had staying power, but figured Way of Water would make more at the domestic box office.

This is kind of a bizarre thing to care about. Both movies are pretty well-liked, though I’ve only seen Top Gun.

Why? Avatar is WW beast, but doing over 700 mil domestically is a tall order. It will likely fall short

Why is it so bizarre and where did I state I cared about it? Every other blockbuster is a comic movie, so where's the interest in comparing it to any of those?
Also, these were both long delayed sequels to their own respective blockbusters. Just thought it was an interesting comparison.

The 3.25 hour running time of Avatar 2 may have something to do with it. lots of folks might just want to watch it at home. Also films with staying power at the box office often have repeated viewing. Even if folks like it, probably not a lot of repeated viewing with for Avatar again due to its run time.
Top Gun was also virtually universally liked by audiences.

Discussing the two biggest movies in years and which will win out on the box office is a bizarre thing to talk about on the Movie&TV board?

I have always thought the hype for Avatar was somewhat contrived. I had friends text me as they were leaving the theater after watching Maverick. Others would make references to the movie during its run, while we were out socializing
The only time I've seen Avatar mentioned, is on here. I dont understand the huge conversation gap from a box office "hit"

I am glad both exist. Total departure from the horseshite that Hollywood trots out. Refreshing to see a great blockbuster that isn’t a superhero movie or a woke reboot.

Both were "movie experiences" that I just had to see twice.
The camera movement following the action on a giant theater screen was so immersive, both were as close to a Disney Park ride (like the Soaring or Avatar rides) as a local theater movie can give you.
One was 99% practical and one was 99% CGI and somehow they were both as equally thrilling & entertaining.

Avatar is stupid. The whole premise of the movie is stupid, but tickets to it are more expensive and it's basically a theme park ride, so it gets a lot of repeat viewings.

No, avatar sux. Maverick was great

Avatar was very enjoyable, but at its runtime length, not a movie I want to watch over and over. Tog Gun: Maverick is one of the most rewatchable non-comedy movies to come out in years.
