I'd say Tombstone is a little more quotable

Probably, but for style points you gotta give some love to...

Is Dances w/ Wolves not considered a western?

The time frame is too soon (the Cowboy era is late 1800s, Dances with Wolves is set in the Civil War). Also, no cowboys are depicted. Most, if not all, Westerns depict a tale of a cowboy or cowboys.

First mention of Silverado. One of my favorites. I'm surprised it took this long to mention.

The very underrated Open Range should be on more people's list.

It's one of my favorites, but it honestly doesn't belong on a top 5 list. It's one of the most fun westerns I think though, and my favorite Costner role.

It's also on Netflix at the moment, watched it for the first time in a while because of that.

Thanks for the heads up about it being on Netflix! It'll be the short list for my son (12) and I to watch together. We've knocked out predator, alien, and aliens in the last 2 weeks.

1. Once Upon a Time in the West (not only the best western, the best movie ever made period)
2. The Wild Bunch
3. The Searchers (This is more like 2 and 2A. You could flip a coin with this and The Wild Bunch.)
4. Tombstone
5. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Feel bad about leaving out Stagecoach. It should be a top five Western but there is nothing to take out to make room for it.

I hate DWW, but many westerns deal with the Civil War Cavalry

Some critics, such as Philip Hardy in his classic Western Encyclopedia of the '80s, include Australian and South African settler films as westerns, and even Daniel Boone-era films such as The Last Of The Mohicans

It's not a typical western but it is definitely a western. Most consider it a movie that revived the western genre as a whole, which had pretty much died off until this came along. Just bc it's not cowboy vs bad cowboy doesn't mean it's not a western. Your criteria is that they have to depict a cowboy, but really the main criteria is they take place in the west.

The timeframe is fine, its whites (not wearing cowboy hats) vs Indians, takes place in the west. If those dont prove it's a western, just google what genre is dances with wolves lol

Some of my favorites were John Wayne films, especially if Ben Johnson was in it. Chisum, The Train Robbers, and Undefeated.

As far as all time greats, Lonesome Dove and Dances With Wolves ( Movie was more about western frontier than civil war)should make most list.
