That’s fair. But we didn’t previously know he was involved.

It sounds like what many of us feared. Great premise, but it doesn’t quite work as a movie. It should have been a limited series on HBO.

It's fine. That's about as much as I can say. I haven't seen the original series in years, so I may have missed a few things here and there.

I wouldn't go as far as to call it a snoozefest, but I agree that it wouldn't really amount to much without the original tie in.

ETA: SPOILER

I found that the movie was more about Dickie than young Tony, although it does kind of show the beginnings of how Tony became who he was. It doesn't really show Tony committing to being a wiseguy, although I guess you could argue that Tony showing up to Holsten's to meet Dickie (after Dickie was shot, unbeknownst to Tony) was the turning point. That's why, the more I think about it, there needs to be a sequel or some other type of miniseries that connects the dots.

I think it would be awesome if they did a spin off series that follows Michael Gandolfini as Tony while he correspondingly ages with the character.

I liked some of the Sopranos easter eggs, like the recreation of the scene where young Tony snuck out to the amusement park to see his dad get arrested, and also where Junior throws out the "Tony doesn't have the makings of a varsity athlete" line in present tense. I got a kick out of those.

I also liked the twist about Junior ordering the hit on Dickie. The audience previously believed, from the Sopranos, that a cop killed Dickie. Classic cover up story by Junior.

Yeh a lot of people thought Tony told Christopher that it was a cop to tie Christopher closer to him with another murder in case he snitched or got caught up with drugs (and he was sort of trying to groom him to be his underboss at that point). I am pretty sure that was Paulie's voice on the other end of the line as well, which confuses me because Junior was never very respected. But it shed light on why he never liked being around Christopher.
Definitely liked it, but it would have made more sense to have it be a limited series. I had heard that it was more "Dickie's Movie" but there was way too much of a story to tell than needed to be told in 2 hours. I also think Tony might not have ended up in the life had it not been for them killing Dickie now. Also, not hitting that rouge numbers guy back was not a very "Sopranos" thing to do, so I was surprised on that. I anticipate there may be more movies, if this gets good reception.

There was a heavy hinting that Tony lied to Chris about the cop killing his dad and that Tony had his own agenda for having Chris kill that cop.

I don’t think the format was the issue it was just a confused story. Half of the story was completely irrelevant. The family’s structure was never defined. There was no revelation about the famed New York/Soprano relationship which was so important to the story. They rewrote a lot of the history we had come to know and that can work if the point is reality isn’t always remembered properly but this was such a strange variation it didn’t make sense. It was also way too heavy handed with the callbacks to the series. In the series these guys seldom used the same phrases, the freshness was part of the charm but in the movie it was like everyone had catch phrases. It was like the writers wanted to make sure the audience caught their callbacks so they kept repeating em. I’m shocked at how bad this was.

I really got a kick out of the younger versions of these characters. Younger Junior and Livia were fantastic. Both actors nailed their characters.

Man was this movie disappointing. I was waiting for some type of plot to kick it but it never did. What was the point of the Harold storyline? Not really sure what we were suppose to get out of this story

Yep, surely this was some sort of prequel to a new mini series that leads to and ties in to the Sopranos. Maybe HBO was testing interest in the story before committing to a whole multi season type series?

IDK ..

This movie really should have just been a series or a 10 episode mini series

I was expecting Tony to shoot Harold during the end credits. I really don’t understand why Harold was even in the movie. They could have cut out about 75% of the movie and put a new 75% starting after Junior’s phone call and it would have been a much better movie. And the Ray Liotta casting was pretty lazy.

Well we all know why he was in the movie but they didn’t even bother to weave it into the story. Just a complete waste of opportunity and material and even if they do try to make another one this movie will have damaged that one.

I think the overuse of galdofini Jr in all the promos kinda fricked with peoples expectations.

I remember reading from the beginning that this was mainly gonna be about Dickie

I’ve never seen a minute of the Sopranos.

I’m thinking of watching this and then diving into the show.

SPOILERS

I'm completely speculating here, but I think the fact that Harold escaped fate by way of Dickie getting whacked may have a (very tenuous at this point) tie in to the alliance between the New York and New Jersey families. Specifically, I think the Harold-Frank Lucas connection might bridge that gap. You heard how Frank told Harold that he "has his own problems with the Five Families." By partnering with Harold, the New York families and the New Jersey families have a common enemy.

Again, just rampant speculation at this point.

The guy who played Harold did a good job but I agree. I guess there was some kind of quota they had to do.

Chase has just signed a “massive” new overall deal with the AT&T-owned network, giving HBO first-look at any projects he develops over the next five years. That includes, obviously, any new Sopranos content, since, after a decade-plus of resisting any efforts to extend the series past its legendarily contentious finale, Chase has clearly softened on the idea of filling out its backstory. (He and director Alan Taylor have given a “might” and “maybe,” respectively, to the idea of a follow-up to Many Saints.)

I've got a pretty good idea why.

I think they really blew a good opportunity with this movie. Should have had more from the characters from the show like Artie, Blundetto, Hesh etc. It was just very disappointing to me.
