Petersen was out of place in the 80s. His grittiness was more in line with the 70s and 90s. He was born 10 years to later or 10 years too early to become the star he could have been (at least in terms of movies).

This movie is actually apropos for the cliche "underrated.". As far as cop movies go.

The car chase is extremely underrated. Between The French Connection and To Live and Die in LA Friedkin may have the top NY and LA chase scenes.

It’s a wonder why William Petersen didn’t become a leading man. Dude was a great actor. His performance in this and Manhunter are just top notch. But props to him for making bank on CSI.

Also William Friedkin proves again why he was a true badass as a director.

Shame this movie is out of print at the moment. I would like to one day add this to my blu ray collection.

There just wasn’t enough for him to do. He needed to “break” after Manhunter, but audiences didn’t get that movie, and his name didn’t get enough attention.

He needed to stay in the Michael Mann stable and get bit parts in Heat or The Insider. A more famous Petersen could have played the Russell Crowe role in The Insider.

Edit: In fact, he really should have had the Tom Sizemore role in Heat.

You got some good takes here. I don’t even know if I agree but compelling to think about.

Peterson almost got the role of Henry Hill in Goodfellas.

He must have either been very difficult to work with or he got market-corrected by someone... But I don't know who.

As also stated above, he was really in the wrong decade. He would have been phemoneal in 1979s gritty crime and war films, but the mid 80s was just not the time for that vibe and those films. It's a miracle Manhunter and TL&D in LA even got made.

I always thought he was someone who would have been perfect in a Tarantino film, too, but that never happened. Ultimately, Peterson took the money Antal payout of CSI over interesting work in the 2nd half of his career.

Can't say I blame him, he was doing made for TV movies right before that show.

My first exposure to him as an actor was as a kid when I watched Peter Benchley's "The Beast" and he was the star. He was phenomenal and I couldn't understand, even a little kid why he wasnt a big star.

Nothing will ever top him in Manhunter though. He was incredible: LINK

Great movie.

This scene is one of my favorites of all time . When he takes the sheet and blows on it and you see the bills etched on it is awesome.

Lightning in a bottle. It almost feels like a Michael Mann film at times. A "feature length" Wang Chung music video (in the best possible way) is another way to think of it (if you were not a teenager in the early/mid 80s, no way to really break it down differently for you).

And, I always forget about it when I want to watch something from that era. But, a really fine, entertaining piece of film right there.
