Easily one of the best espionage/spy films I've seen. It may be a little hard to follow on the first watch, but it only gets better upon further watches since you can know who's the mole and you can pick up on so many more little things.

Also, what a loaded cast. They caught Cumberbatch and Hardy right before they became too big for roles like that. Plus Oldman as Smiley was perfect.

There's just Nothing better for spy movies than cold War, European-set stories.

I think it is a fantastic movie, but it is not for everyone.

My Dad was a big reader. This was his favorite book. He read it multiple times. Unfortunately he passed away in 2005..I am sure he would have enjoyed the movie.

Umpteenth thread on this movie .... but yeah, it’s the best spy/espionage flick of all time IMHO and Gary Oldman was robbed of an Oscar for his portrayal of Smiley.

Powerhouse cast and script though - and beautifully produced and directed.

Just depends on the quality of the movie, all of those variables, and how it comes together on the screen.

I was not a fan of The Russia House film even though it was a great cast, on paper, and I loved the book. I really liked Gorky Park the film though, and the book.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is #1 for me followed by Three Days of the Condor, then the Hitchcock trifecta of 39 Steps, North by Northwest and Foreign Correspondent.

My favorite book that was so good it could never be made into a movie though, is Ludlum’s Materese Circle or, en Italiano, Il Circolo Materese. Imagine American super spy meets Spectre meets KGB meets Camorra meets CIA meets The Godfather.

Helluva read. Would love to see it made into a movie if the right cast and crew ever came along.

Besides Oldman, I'd say there were at least three other Oscar worthy performances: Hardy, Cumberbatch, and maybe the best of them all, Mark Strong.

It was just a masterclass on all fronts in classic espionage filmmaking.

It took me several days to finally complete the movie . It was fine but a slog to get through.

I was excited to watch it but man was it a chore to get through. I can’t remember a single detail about it now.

One of the best scenes in a movie full of great scenes. It shows Smiley's cutthroatness and ability to get information, even from his own. He doesn't need a gun, in fact he only pulls one at the very end. He doesn't need car chases and explosions and torture. He Just finds someone's weakness and pushes the button, all because of information -- the utmost valued commodity in his line of work. He's the ultimate spy in a war with no shots fired.

Absolute masterpiece. Whole cast just killed it.

Another good one (though a solid rung below) in the "No shots fired" sub-genre is Spy Game with Robert Redford and Brad Pitt.

I'll have to give it another shot. I went into thinking it could not outdo the t.v. series, and that was my conclusion. Alec Guiness was the best smiley ever.

I agree about Strong but am interested in why you omitted Colin Firth? So much was centered around him, both he and Strong.

Here’s a little treat for all fans of this movie ... via YouTube. LINK: https://youtu.be/FPq3DC3u9DA ... when you watch it retrospectively it is amazing how much it gives away in less than two minutes.

Great song too that I remember so well when it was a hit and why it was a hit and in what movie originally, on what soundtrack.

The only reason I didn't mention Firth, who of course is a great actor, is because I just don't think he had enough screen time or big acting scenes. Only at the very end did he really have good character interaction.

Rewatching The Second Best Secret Agent on YouTube right now ... free movie. Under appreciated parody of the Bond movies.

Charles Vine is #005 I believe ... charged with saving a Swedish scientist who has invented an anti gravity device, and his smoke show daughter of course.

Fun movie.

I'm a big fan of TTSS, Bourne, Bond, etc.

I've heard of this one before but never read it. Is it similar to TTSS or more like the boune/bond spy stuff?
