Three thoughts on Split (Spoilers Possible)

Since the other thread on this board is full of mouthbreathers who seemed bent on hating the movie just "because" or were so triggered by the ending (while going into it knowing there was a supernatural element to the movie) that it "ruined" the movie for them, I have a few thoughts:
1) Betty Buckley gives the performance of her long and distinguished career. She's just superb on every level with this pitch-perfect performance, and major props to Shyamalan for giving her such a memorable role. I'd argue for her to be nominated for some Supporting Actress awards when 2017 wraps up.
2) Once in a blue moon, an actor receives deserved props for a genre role. It's happened a few times; think Anthony Hopkins in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and Kathy Bates in MISERY. James McAvoy needs to be remembered when next year's awards season rolls around and he should be rewarded handsomely. His performance here is nothing short of a mesmerizing tour de force...truly bringing his character(s) to frightening life. Just "wow" on every level.
3)Keep a close eye on Anya Taylor-Joy. Between last year's memorable turn in THE WITCH and her role here as an abducted high schooler, the young actress proves that she's sporting some serious acting chops. We're just scratching the surface of her potential.

The whole cast played their parts brilliantly. Betty Buckley deserves a best supporting actress nomination.
McAvoy fricking crushed this role. If he doesn't get nominated for every best actor award out there next year the awards mean nothing.
The ending surprised me and I hope that M. Night makes another movie based on that premise, freaking insane.

Saw it last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Haven't seen Unbreakable so none of that mattered to me. Taking the movie for what it is, it's a solid flick. Theater was absolutely packed too.

I hope this film doesn't get forgotten when Oscar season rolls around next year

Just got out of the theater and I thought it was great. James McAvoy was amazing.
The "twist" at the end didn't ruin anything

James McAvoy was absolutely brilliant. Easily one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen since maybe DiCaprio in Revenant.

Just watched it. Mcavoy killed it at his role. Now I need to watch Unbreakable....

People love to shite on Shymalan, but he is a very competent filmmaker. His camerawork and cinematography are very good, and he gets a lot out of his actors.

Quite the opposite--it saved and legitimized that whole beast section. It seems stupid at first and then you see Bruce Willis. It establishes that Split is part of the Unbreakable universe, which has legitimate superheroes and supervillains

Me seeing him turn into the "beast":

These things have never been his problem.

I like the twist ending, but the execution was bad. Seemed a little forced when the girl was saying her lines next to Bruce. That was some bad acting. And I don't know how they gonna make a movie with Bruce vs Mcavoy. Some of the personalities aren't really bad. So is Bruce gonna beat up the lil boy or the fashion designer?

It's going to be David Dunn vs The Beast

And he accomplished this with only 1 month to prepare for the role.

We enjoyed it. The tacked on ending definitely made up for any problems that we had during the movie.
I was thinking that M Night was progressing as a filmmaker until the very end when they began to throw in the "personalities patterned after zoo animals" malarkey. He went right back to overexplaining his rationalizations for having the plot.
The Unbreakable thing felt like a huge afterthought. As if he'd made a sequel deal after the film was in the can and came up with some final dialogue on the fly.

I watched this a couple of weeks ago and I agree 100% about McAvoy's performance. I think this was probably his 2nd best performance behind Wanted.
The introductions to each of the personalities were all very well done, but when we see the transitions between them later on it really was fascinating to watch. The discernment of the doctor to recognize the roles of each personality, but also their potential dangers, was manifested perfectly. I don't think that's over-explaining. I think it keeps it in the realm of this specific story even if later on we see it placed in a larger story. While there could be a supernatural element, the reference to the origin of the beast personality being environmental and animalistic is true to the character.
Maybe I have it wrong, but that's what I came away with. I haven't read anything from M. Night about what it really means or where he's going with it.

I thought I read that he was making a movie that combines the stories together? Or was I just dreaming?

I absolutely loved the movie. The only thing I didn't like was the creepy uncle angle. They could have easily come up with another way to show why she would pull the trigger. A robbery, a murdered parent or something like that.
