When the occasional "Movies You're Embarrassed to Say You've Never Seen" thread pops up, I'll have to toss my hat on the It's a Wonderful Life pile.
Do yourself a favor and watch it. It is truly a classic!! We watch it at least once a year.

0% chance that Mary Hatch ends up a spinster working at the library. She’s with Sam Wainright or somebody like that, getting yearly trips to Europe and weekends in New York.

Stewart even blamed Reed for the film's poor box office

Apparently Stewart couldn't understand why Capra and himself weren't tremendously successful again and blamed the movies poor performance on the relatively unknown... Donna Reed. Which is idiotic because 80% of the movie is all George... And no one has ever said, geez I really hate that Mary Bailey.

Love this movie, but I watched The Shop Around The Corner last night on WatchTCM and was reminded what an absolutely brilliant actor Stewart was pre-war.

As an aside - its a shame that Hollywood got away from taking original properties like the Hungarian play Parfumerie and turning them into perfect films like this, without “Americanizing” them. Guess it was mostly because they had great European-born directors like Lubitsch and Wilder back then.

I’ve watched this movie countless times as well as Gone With the Wind and tonight, for the first time; I realized that Uncle Billy and Gerald O’Hara are the same actor.

Yeah...I don't know why Stewart initially blamed Reed for the poor box office performance, but it was still a hit with critics. The film was nominated for 5 Academy Awards (including a nomination for Stewart). Despite being displeased with the initial run of the film, Stewart probably took solace in the fact that over time it became his most well-known and well-reviewed movie. Though I'm sure there are a bunch of people out there who would argue Vertigo.

An absolute classic and the one movie that makes me tear up every single time I watch it.
