How good is this show compared to The Sopranos? I have never seen an episode.

Sopranos used to be my favorite show, now The Wire is.

I am 8 episodes into Season 1 of The Wire after beginning watching it for the first time. I have also seen The Sopranos in its entirety.
So far I would give the slight edge to The Wire because of 2 main reasons:
1. The Sopranos works in a genre that I'm already familiar with. I've seen lots of crime dramas about Italian-American families. The Wire, on the other hand, is a look into crime mostly in black communities.
2. Usually I am totally apathetic toward police investigation shows. Somehow The Wire surmounts that disinterest and I fiend like a crack addict to watch 3-4 episodes in a row.
I think they are on par with each other in quality. I may end up liking one more than the other in the end, but at this point I can safely say they're probably in the top 3-5 television shows of the past 10, maybe even 20, years.

And the best part of The Wire is watching it for a second time. The amount of detail that is in the show that you miss the first go around is insane

even people in law enforcement will tell you that The Wire is on the mark. and, if you've ever hung in the hood ... in other words it's well worth the watch ... i think i'll take the advice of another poster and watch it again sometime ... which i almost never do with movies/series ... it's that good
just watching the first two ep. when you realize that the good guys and bad guys are pretty much the same, the way they do that is striking, to say the least.

I'm an avid Sopranos fan and have seen each episode at least twice. I started watching the wire on 101 network last fall and am a few episodes into season 3 at this point. I really do enjoy the Wire, but at this point I still have to give the nod to the Sopranos as being my favorite. That may change as I get further into the Wire tho.

I liked it better than Sopranos. I bought it off Ebay. It's easy to sit there and watch a bunch of episodes in a row because the show gets you hooked. I never wanted it to end.

i watched them both online recently. i watched the wire first. If I had to choose i guess i would pick sopranos just barely just because i prefer mafia stories over dock worker's sons carrying ducks around.
