What I gather is its the bacteria from a walkers mouth (like how dirty a persons mouth is and full of bacteria) that causes an infection. An infection that kills a person super quick.

In the beginning of the series if you were bitten or scratched you died/turned. It's weird that now you specifically get bitten and turn even if the bite isn't necessarily life threatening. It's selective wounding. Everyone that dies also turns, so what specifically is the mechanism of being bitten and then turning?
