The Twilight Zone Incident

I have always been fascinated by this horrible on set incident and subsequent trial. I went to a design panel discussion today and toward the end, an older couple came in late. The husband set next to me and it was John fricking Landis.
The book is very hard to get OUTRAGEOUS CONDUCT ... in the book if memory serves, Kathleen Kennedy was alleged to be on set that night and got out quickly.
I read it years ago and lost my copy, but what an interesting story. Needs a documentary or reissue of the book, but I get feeling it was squashed by some powerful people.

If Landis wasn't a rich, powerful Hollywood director he would have spent years in prison for the accident. He seemed to be single handily responsible for almost all the bad decisions and legal/safety violations that lead to the incident.

Can you provide any context? What incident!?

It's probably not common knowledge anymore to anyone under say 30, but during the filming of the 1983 Twilight Zone movie there was a helicopter crash on set that resulted in the deaths of one of the lead actors (Vic Morrow) and two children who were on set as extras for the scene.
Pyrotechnics caused a low flying helicopter to crash land and it landed directly on top of Morrow who was carrying the two kids. Killed all three instantly. Morrow and one of the kids were decapitated.
Needless to say there were a gazillion safety violations and laws knowingly being broken all over the place. There were lawsuits draw out for years and various civil settlements paid. Nobody went to jail though.

Landis and Chevy Chase almost got into a fight on the set of The Three Amigos because Chevy was bringing it up while filming.

Landis should have gone to prison.

Quote from Landis I found:
Yeah, who cares about Morrow and those kids, his career may not recover.
What a POS.

He still seems a bit c***y. Was making snide remarks about some of the panel …

What’s even wilder is that Vic Morrow originally demanded they change the ending as he always had a massive fear of flying in helicopters. He always thought he was to die in a helicopter crash so they reworked the end scene from him flying away from vietnam with the kids in tow to him swimming away with the kids as the helis buzzed overhead. His fear, as we know turned true, just not in the way he thought. Terribly tragic and the video is incredibly sad. Blades struck them so hard, they were flung out of the water, just terrible.

And it really didn't suffer. He just had to pivot back to comedies and started on Trading Places a few months later. And right before Trading Places he made the fricking Thriller music video.

Not to diminish the tragedy discussed above, but a hidden gem in the Vietnam portion of the movie that involved the helicopter crash is this...

Here’s a great podcast that goes over the incident in great detail and all of the drama afterwards. Since the movie was an anthology, all directors (including Steven Spielberg) had to be tied up in court. Spielberg broke off all ties with Landis afterwards. Definitely worth a listen!

I only learned that a couple years ago.
