Nolan going all practical effects on the Odyssey was certainly a choice. If any movie needed special effects to really capture the material this one was it.
That scene in particular was pretty bad without some CGI. When the pigs were turning back into men there was one particularly bad pan cut behind Circe’s robe that made it so obvious it destroyed the illusion.

We should be applauding the practical effects, instead of entire movies shot with CGI that look so robotic.
Odyssey and project hail Mary were both great examples of what could be done.

Nolan’s Circe was a disappointing fail.
Sirens also.
Polyphemus the cyclops meh.
Wrath of Poseidon just looked like a storm at sea.
Zeus thundered but no visual.
Trojan Horse was rather puny.
Good cast but lacking creative vision.

I’d like to have seen the sirens that would’ve been cool

Left: Circe according to Nolan Right: Circe according to the Odyssey
No. The right is Circe according to a painter in the 1800s, not The Odyssey.

the only interesting circe is the one depicted in the book by madeline miller.

All of this. I’m a big Nolan fan but he fumbled the ball on this visually.
It’ll make billions and probably win a few Oscars so it’ll be deemed very successful. But it could’ve been much more entertaining if he’d used a bit of modern movie magic. I’m not talking Marvel level CGI but just a bit sprinkled here and there to really bring out the fantasy and magic that you get from the book.
