My wife and I watched The Outsiders on Hulu tonight( it’s available thru the HBO part of Hulu)

Hadn’t seen the movie in years, but really enjoyed watching it again. Strong performances from a then young cast of future stars.

I remember reading the book back in school and the movie does it justice in my opinion.

Yeah, Coppola basically transcribed the S.E. Hinton books he did. Rumble Fish is a pretty faithful adaptation as well.

It’s one of the most straightforward adaptations from what I remember from watching and reading it in 1997.

So many big names like Cruise, Swayze, and Diane Lane (and secondary stars later on like Estevez, Rob Lowe, and Matt Dillon) yet the lead is C Thomas Howell.

I saw the hitcher when it first came out. Kinda fricked me up a little. Terrific movie with a fitting ending. Very dark.

C Thomas Howell.

Was a superstar for that short period. E.T., the Outsiders, Tank, Red Dawn, Secret Admirer, The Hitcher and Soul Man were all released within a 4 year period.

His problem was that he only had to grow up a little bit to lose his appeal. He was always the naive kid who was thrown into a strange or bad situation. You can't get away with that persona when you get into your late 20's, much less later.

As a teanager I read all of S.E. Hinton's work in the mid-80(The Outsiders, Tex, Rumble Fish & That Was Then, This Is Now). Loved them all. The movies were all good too.

Back in the day C Tomas Howell was THE teen star. Unfortunately for him, he grew up. Last I saw of him was in the TNT series Animal Kingdom, which is very good.
