Gohan showed signs of badassersy during the Namek/Frieza saga, but he looked like such a little douche with that bowl cut

I always thought DB was for Goku but DBZ would see that role eventually passed to Gohan as he progressed through the trials and even at his dad's encouragement to defeat cell after he became SSJ2. Probably should have ended there with implying Gohan, Goku's progeny, is finally ready to take his place. But even after that he should have taken the reigns if they wanted to continue the series due to its popularity. But like you said people were attached to Goku so they had to wimp away Gohans power to make room for Goku again.

I think DBZ was about Gohan just as that abortion not by Toriyama was about Gohan's daughter.
And Cell's death was the perfect torch passing as Goku helped Gohan believe in himself and overcpower Cell then he didn't come back from death because the earth was safe with Gohan and co.

I agree, and Gohan was my favorite character up until that point. I wanted him to take over so badly.. and when he defeated Cell I was ecstatic. I still watch his SSJ2 transformation on Youtube all the time and it always makes me excited again. The nostalgiac feels, bro. What Toriyama did to him post-cell is just... unforgivable, as a big fan of Gohan. Then when he gave Gohan a chance to redeem himself and be the hero of the series and the protector of Earth, Toriyama spit in Gohan's face again.
I think that Toriyama's original intent was to make Gohan take over Goku's role in protecting the Earth. There was too much character development and lead-up to that for it not to be, imo. Why he diverted from that plan and made Gohan a whipping boy again is beyond me.

He'd already been doing DB every week for 10 years by that time. Dude was probably burnt out and just did the post-Cell stuff for money.

I love how I got a lot of responses saying Gohan was suppose to take over when nothing backs that opinion up at all. The story was never about Gohan, just because many of you got attached to him during the 10 episodes he was important in the cell saga, doesn't mean he was propped up to take the helm. He was a kid, he was half-human, and he had a father who loved fighting whereas Gohan didn't like to fight as much. I think some of you have blinders on.

Ever since Gohan hit Raditz the entire arc was unleashing his hidden power. It finally happened against cell and Gohan was poised to take over as protector of the earth. That can't really be argued. At all.
