Just finished the series and really enjoyed it. I’ve seen the vast majority of HBO original series, but had never even heard of this one til a friend recommended it.

Anybody else seen it? Thoughts? My overall take is if you don’t take politics too seriously, it’s a great watch. Good character development and challenges how you view the news you take in.

Entertaining but if they had gone with fictional stuff, like they did after season 1, instead of the Monday morning quarterbacking it probably would've been better for the show. That definitely hurt it with critics.

It’s been a few years but I remember really liking the first season and thinking it wasn’t great after that.

Where it shined for me was its handling of social media and how it’s affecting the news both positively (avg people can voice opinions and be key witnesses to events) and negatively (clicks for $$, news reported but not fact checked, etc). Think of how many young people get their “news” from TikTok, Instagram, etc. these days.

Maybe I’m late to the party, but I found it informative and entertaining.

I thought it was good, especially the Bin Laden ep, but I think it hurt the show out of the blocks because it turned people off.

One of my all-time favorite shows. I actually prefer it over The West Wing. Some of the best dialogue you'll ever see. Love when they would cover the real life events like bin Laden and the BP oil spill. The election coverages were just perfect. Legit felt like that's what it'd be like to be in a newsroom when breaking news happened.

Jeff Daniels was in credible in it. He really is a fantastic actor.

Don and Sloan were probably my two favorite characters though. At least by the end of the show.

We've had this conversation before lol.

I actually just finished a rewatch a month or two ago after Newsroom came up in the other thread. My thoughts didn't change really. Very good show, definitely worth the watch (and rewatch).

Definitely good characters, the poli stuff didn't bother me, they address Jeff Daniels character possibly being a RINO, there is a little too much of Jim and Maggie back and forth, and my gripe of everyone is way too quick with their witty, charming and poignant dialogue at all times without even a millisecond pause for thought.

Agree about Don and Sloan. Sloan.

I've never seen the show but I'm guessing this means "if you're conservative and don't mind being subtly preached at for hours on end by left wing actors about how you need to learn your lesson"

This.

And the fact that in every historical crisis, someone in the newsroom had a relative or friend with key information. Not a journalist's contact, a friend or relative.

That and the usual Sorkin overkill with people spewing out perfectly scripted, super-intelligent diatribes like they just came up with it off the cuff.

This is my #1 complaint for the show. It bothered me less on my rewatch because I was previously aware, but it was still very noticeable.

I told iwyLSUiwy before, I've worked with highly intelligent people and no one talks like this in real life. Even the most intelligent and articulate people.
