This will be introducing exactly no one to Little Mermaid.

A) all things being equal, I'd have preferred Disney stick to that source material when doing TLM in the first place, but it obviously would not have gone over well.

B) since they Disnefied the story, THAT becomes Disney's source material and the one it ought to stick with, because it's the one they've shown people is their version for decades.

Disney owns that version, so they can do with it what they want. In this case, they chose to cast a black person in the lead and literally nothing about the rest of the story needs to change.

Do you get this worked up any time they recast Batman or Spiderman? Or only when skin color changes?

It's not no one, but it's an extremely small audience of people seeing this movie who don't know the little mermaid from the original.

So again again, what goes that have to do with box office and budget?

You wanted to push back on Dumbo breaking even/making a profit by pointing out additional expenses and how that revenue doesn't all go to Disney, which no one argued otherwise. But if you want to be thorough, the product lifecycle is not simply BO revenue. That does not alone determine profitability, though it is the largest revenue earner.

Disney still has digital sales, physical sales, and licensing rights it continues to sell after first run BO. Maybe that was not enough to push it over, but it likely got it pretty close to BE or over.

Yes. None of these will make money.

Most of these films when they hit, hit because of international audiences. And a lot of those territories are not going to be awash in Disney culture the way America is. Let alone for a film from the 1980's that mostly released here.

You said Dumbo doubled its budget.

And some of these things have their own expenses not included in the film budget.

How much do you think Disney keeps from the box office?

Everything but the short bit with Melissa McCarthy looks mediocre at best. She looks like she might be a good Ursula from that short clip.

Stop allowing them to make you notice skin color. It’s wrong when they place emphasis on it, and it’s equally wrong when others allow themselves to be suckered into doing the same.

So forced diversity and racist bullshite can’t be talked about or else people complaining about the overt racist skin swap are racist? frick that take the high road bullshite. It’s gotten us to the clown world we live in today.

Are you serious? So the same international audience Disney depends on for box hits
Isn't familiar with Disney? I don't think you understand the company's worldwide reach.

They have theme parks and vacation properties all over the world.

Disney's wild successes lately must be why they just dumped Chapek in favor of bringing back Iger...

If the fails add up, they will inevitably reverse course. Disney has that perogative.

Yes, its reported production budget. Marketing is an additional expense, and there are other additional revenue streams as well.

I mean sure, a little. But licensing digital rights and selling digital(and some physical) copies of a film has a lot less overhead/expenses.

You're not understanding what I said. The box office number may have doubled the production budget. The box office is not Disney's revenue.

They are hellbent on believing that a pubically traded company is intentionally sabotaging its bottomline.

If you think the source materials of the predominant stories are "too white" which is what you suggested, then write NEW materials or bring to the public other stories, fables, etc from other cultures and make them popular.
Movies about Anansi or Native American folklore would be great. I would pay to see that on screen.

Well they also made one of the most iconic side characters in Disney movies female in this version as well. So I wouldn’t call it “literally nothing.”

I guess cause you love to argue by playing stupid, but do you really not see why international appeal hits more quadrants than America? Yes there is plenty of familiarity as far as American IP's go, so there is the nostalgia factor too, but there is vastly more potential newcomers to these remakes than you will find in America. Which helps grow the brand.
