No, Roth is being arrested at the Airport and questioned by reporters. Rocco goes up and and shoots him, then gets shot himself by the feds.

I don't think I've ever seen it? Is it cut from some versions?

It looks very Kennedy-like.

The Ruby-Oswald shooting.

I'm starting to think that the rest of the world hasn't watched The Godfather 5,000 times like some of us have.

yes, and young Vito shooting Don Fanucci in the hall, with Fanucci grabbing at his shirt, was inspired by the Zapruder film of JFK

I thought Fredo either snuck the hitters into the compound or at least directed them towards a less guarded entrance route.

The thing I always wondered is who killed the shooters? The only person it could have been was Fredo, so that makes him kind of a badass.

Fredo was STUPID.

Fredo was used by Johnny and Hyman. Fredo was surprised it was a hit (remember the midnight call to his bungalow).

He wasn't smart enough to know it couldn't have been anything else.

Michael and Fredo both should have learned from Sonny's mistake. Plus Fredo was warned by Michael previously.

"Fredo, Your my Brother and I love, but NEVER TAKE SIDES AGAINST THE FAMILY AGAIN. NEVER."

I noticed my comment on the first page has 5 downvotes, but no one has offered any explanation of how Fredo betrayed Michael because no one knows. It's a weird hole.

This is complete BS. Fredo betrayed Michael by being "friends" with Olla. Olla was using him. Fredo is a moron and could potentially pass seemingly trivial information to Olla that could work against the family. Information such as the date of that big party could be used to set up the hit.

As for foreshadowing, all Santino did was express favor to the Turk's plan to import narcotics and that set off the entire Mafia War. Information is important. Fredo is stupid. He was warned.

Ok. I youtubed the scene and saw him get gut shot.

I have seen it before but was probably half asleep or drunk.

And they use Rocco?

He was a top tier guy?

you can't get a flunky to do that. He's the one that says "difficult, not impossible" when they are arguing about whether they can get to Roth.

Nothing like watching the godfather after eating your fill at thanksgiving, getting sick of family and bad football.

True. But you think they'd have a better plan and exit strategy. Could have went all JFK and used an Italian Bolt Action Rifle.

Just using one of your top guys to plug a guy with a Saturday night special, and then try to run away. I guess a captured Rocco would be a liability too though. They'd have had him whacked in prison. Not that Rocco would talk.

Dude, the POTUS was in an open air car to gain publicity and wave to crowds. The feds would not parade around in an open convertible with a known gangster they just arrested.

ETA: what hits did they do ever, from a distance? You gotta get up close and BaDaBing, you blow his brains all over your nice Ivy League suit.

Michael and Tom argued about it. Roth was flying to different countries seeking asylum and if he comes back he will be arrested. They knew the feds would be waiting for him. Neri mentioned Israel and somewhere in South America. They said no one would take him and he was flying back to Miami iirc and that's where Michael wanted him met. They knew the feds would be waiting for him. As GF wiki points out, Rocco was head of security for the Lake Tahoe house, it is possible, Michael wanted him on a likely suicide mission because of the unforgivable lapse in security.

I think many are misunderstanding what a "plot hole" is. Just because every little detail wasn't explained is not a "plot hole". If they showed how the shooters that tried to kill Michael got on the grounds, who killed them, the full nature of Fredo's betrayal a 3 hour movie would become a 3 day movie. We don't need to know who killed them. We know Fredo was involved because he took a call from Uncle Junior and after telling Mike he didn't know them, openly admitted that he knew them well enough to hang out in sleezy dives in Cuba.

We know from the first movie Fredo is week and he was warned not to take sides against the family again. Whether he knew it was a hit or not is subject for debate, which BTW can be the point of art in a lot of cases, for you the viewer/reader etc to form opinions with out it being spoon fed by the creator.

To me, this is the biggest plot hole. It makes absolutely no sense.

The Scene.

Thought that was purposely botched hit on one of Corleone's trusted allies to make him flip against Michael. Instead he went to the feds.

And since Moe Green was tight with Roth, Roth would know that Fredo had a history of being easily seduced by someone outside of the family.

think that whole plotline was kind of murky after watching the movies countless times. Roth wanted to kill Michael as revenge for Moe Green? And is still willing to do big business with Michael when the hit is a miss?

This is the part that I don't get. Why is Roth begging Michael to stay and telling him he needs him so much if he intends to kill him?

Plus there never really are clearly defined actions by Fredo. What exactly did he do to betray Michael? That part isn't such a big deal.

"keep your friends close and your enemies closer".

he clearly gave some kind of info to Johnny Ola. Recall too there is a scene when Fredo is asleep and gets a call from Johnny Ola, who asks for 1 more favor. Fredo says you guys lied to me, don't call me again, i don't know what you are talking about (or something along those lines). Again, the gory details are not that important. Sonny just makes 1 brief comment and Sollozo knows he wants the deal. God knows what Fredo said that they used. But it doesn't really matter.
