Aliens be like, "frick it, these creatures are too primitive and violent, on to the next solar system."

I hypothesize that the UFO was a helicopter, or helicopters. All the people that saw it presumably will be killed in the near future except Solverson. He was being chocked to death by Bear at the time. Your mind will play funny tricks on you when you are close to death. Just my attempt to explain things. TIFWIW.

Yeah. It'll be interesting to see how they try to wrap this up in one episode.
Any chance it will be a launching point to Season Three?

It could be a military thing, it could be UFO. It could link back to Ted Danson's room, probably does. I'm sure they wouldn't just toss that in without an awesome finish in mind. It could be open ended, it could be clear cut. I trust it will be highly entertaining. Not disappointed in the least because the writers, director, ect., always put in things with solid backgrounds of knowledge they personally have themselves. That's the mark of a great writer. You don't just guess. You know. And, like the Indian and the hair, you can take it very deep for those who have studied that subject and/or also have deeper knowledge, while at the same time make it simple and still highly entertaining for those who don't know the possible history or logic behind the scene. I think it's going to finish strong. And, since they've totally blown everyone's mind, and we don't where it's going, you really leave out the part where people can have an idea and then be disappointed. Clever on that part, too.

Well, I think it will be left up to interpretation. Like someone else said, the UFO is part of the story as it is being told. We may find out that Lou is the only survivor of those that were there. If his account is the only account of what happened there, I am ok with this. He believes he saw a UFO, when it could have just been a hallucination of his as the oxygen to his brain was being choked away.

I don't know why, but my first thought when the light of the UFO shined on him was his wife. Don't know if she's quite dead yet, but I thought about some sort of connection between the two things happening. I'm pretty sure that's a stretch, though. But I have pulled one out of left field once this season.
Oh, and several people there saw the UFO, or whatever it was. They made sure with Peggy's classic comment to Ed.

UFO or not, that was one of the best episodes of TV I've seen in a long time.

It's the late 70's, so my first thought was Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and all of the UFO hooplah that was out there in that decade.
Starting with Chariots of the Gods in 1970 and going through CEotTK, we were pretty obsessed with UFO's. This really does give the series an added 70's feel.

Bear was beast this episode, took a couple shots and was still about to kill Lou. RIP Bear

That was great. It's nothing just a flying saucer. WTF.

Since next season is closer to present day I hope some of the characters from season 2 appear.

I think those elements in a story are really exciting because we’re so unused to having them. We usually separate our genres more neatly. To suddenly have a genre element come into a dramatic story is exciting.

There was a "credible" UFO encounter at that time.
We know Solverson survives as he was in season one.
It's his story. He says he saw a UFO.
Don't let it ruin the show for you, we are watching a "true story" as told by the survivors, not life in motion.

When Lou was talking to Billy Bob in season one he talked about an animal in Sioux Falls. I guess Bear was the animal.

Yes, sir. One after another. Probably, if you stacked ’em high, could’ve climbed to the second floor. Now, I saw something that year I ain’t ever seen, before or since. I’d call it animal. Except animals only kill for food. This was… Sioux Falls. Ever been?
