Finally got around to watching this and was surprised to see how mixed the reviews were. Obviously it was a vanity project but I found it to be really well acted and shot. Paul Dano stood out but the entire cast was great.

The bedroom scene with the Jesus freak, the meeting with John Ford, and all the "movies" sammy created in the film were the highlights for me.

Maybe this was a case of a movie being a better watch on an airplane or something than at a theater but I was kinda surprised by the negative reactions (albeit there was very little said about it on TD that I could find).

Whenever I remember this movie, all I can think about is this tweet.

I hope you're not referring to Judd Hirsch's Jewish uncle character.

It’s a very well-assembled auto-biographical story.

Well-shot, well-paced, well-acted.

Hardly reinvents the wheel, but it’s still Spielberg at the helm.

Solid b plus in my book.
