Look at the top rated shows. Outside of 60 Minutes, there isn't a whole lot of shows smarter than BBT in the top twenty. We like stupid crap.

I think TBBT might be the most divisive show this board discusses.

ETA: For one thing, you have to have at least a moderately decent working vocabulary to get some of the jokes. Obviously there are ones thrown in there for anybody as well.. but just because you're not catching every joke doesn't mean it's "dumb" (note I didn't say getting every joke.. catching..)

It truly is one of the worst shows I've ever seen. And I'm not really a movie/tv "hipster". Watching this show is likke window shopping at a Wal-Mart in the rural south while wearing camo.

I have heard people refer to it as nerd "black face" and I think that's an appropriate description.
The characters are ridiculous caricatures and the jokes are repetitive. How many times can one laugh at the Sheldon knocking on the door and saying someone's name over and over?
Also using big words is not good writing.
But to be fair, it's not any worse than most traditional three-camera sitcoms with laugh tracks are nowadays. They're all pretty terrible with maybe 2-3 exceptions.

I really don't get people's massive hatred of laugh tracks. I simply don't care. Was Cheers not funny because of a laugh track?

Yea i get not liking a laugh track but cmon. Seinfeld had a laugh track for for crying out loud. It's just something traditonal sitcoms do. The first three seasons of the TBBT were extremely funny and the idea was pretty damn original, even if the the method of delivery, the traditional sitcom, was not. I know Parsons gets alot of hate on here for winning the two emmy's but I think he deserves them bc nothing else on the show is funny anymore. The writing has become repetive and the addition of the girls trying to make it like a nerd Friends is just fricking awful. Parsons is a pheomenal IMO and the only thing that makes the show worth watching anymore

I thought I liked this show when I watched episdoes from the first season with a roommate, but I saw a current episode the other night and it was god awful.
