I hate theaters now. Mostly because the older and wiser I get…the more I dislike people. The last thing I want to be is surrounded by strangers I dislike when I’m trying to enjoy a movie in peace.
I don't dislike people, but I do dislike when people use the movies as babysitting for their teenagers who don't know how to sit quietly and turn their cellphones off.
I also dislike it when people bring their babies to the movie theater even though this never ever works out.
You know where these things aren't a problem, ever? At my house.

If you went to the theaters tomorrow to see The Batman, you’d probably be the only one there.
If you don’t like opening night viewings, wait a month. Or go during the week. Y’all act like every viewing is a sold out show. The Thursday before opening night, I saw it at 7 and there were maybe 7 other people there. I had my feet propped up on the chair in front of me and I had no care in the world. Probably had 20 seats between me and the next person in either direction.

people that would rather watch specific movies at home than at the theater, i believe, are sociopaths. no one can tell me they get the same experience from sitting on the coach looking at a walmart Onn LED TV with stereo audio like they do at a Dolby/IMAX theater. i almost would rather you people not watch it all because you're not going to get the full experience of this movie sitting on the couch. and then you all are going to come here telling us how "shitty" it is/was
I saw Batman in IMAX and I agree that experience was worth it.
However, overall I am souring on the movie theatre experience. Maybe it’s just because I’m getting older.
I saw Spider-Man No Way Home in theatres. I was sitting next to a man-child who was kicking and screaming when some of the big reveals happened - not the normal “big” reactions to these kind of Marvel things, but entirely over the top. It was annoying and took away from my experience. And that’s been my general experience before as well - your experience depends on who is in the theatre and sometimes it can be ruined by an annoying or inconsiderate patron.
I can watch a movie at home on my 78” LG OLED with a sound bar where I don’t have to worry at all about that. Is the sound/visual as good as a theatre? No, but it’s not that far off from a regular theatre (not including IMAX). Add in the benefits of having the best seat in the house at home, being able to start the movie whenever you want, pause for bathroom breaks and drink/snack refills. Oh, and it’s significantly cheaper. I certainly see how if you have the right setup at home, theatres are a thing of the past for you

bullshite.
I have an almost $20k Dolby Atmos home theater setup that is fantastic and I still like to go see the big blockbuster movies at the theater because it's not the same.

This is why I didn’t bother seeing No Way Home in theater.
First, despite it being well received, MCU movies are not exactly the high water mark of theatrical experiences. Even the good movies have a cookie-cutter aesthetic that is totally not worth the price of admission at this point.
Secondly, I anticipated that annoying man children would be in attendance throughout the first couple of weeks. “Kicking and screaming” and whooping when the “big reveal” (that everyone predicted long before) occurred. It’s an annoying experience. Reminds me of some of the groan-inducing fanboyism that plagued the screenings of the Disney Star Wars movies I attended.

These lighter crowds have made the problems even worse. The people who actually go to movies act like they own the place.

No. Idiots being in the theater is only part of the problem. No one being there does not solve the problem of theaters being extremely overpriced.

The "Endgame" moment you mentioned was far more impactful because of the crowd. Outside of moments like that where we're talking about a film that required people to purchase tickets way in advance, you're not getting that sort of experience. The "experience" falls off significantly from there.

so, are you cheap? lazy? both?
I’m not a big comic book movie guy. Spider Man and Batman is about it
I watched Dune in theaters
I watched Interstellar in theaters
But yes, I’m cheap

I normally don't think going to the theater to see a movie is worth it, but this one is. The sound is a huge component of the movie. The first time they introduce the Batmobile you hear/feel it before you see it...that was pretty awesome.

Why rush this to HBO max? It's still showing good late legs. I don't get it.

For the simps that can’t handle a public outing.

Fair. I guess if you factor in the TV/entertainment set up, that’s quite expensive.
But I don’t view it that way. I bought the TV mainly for sports and TV shows. Not explicitly for movies. So with that being said and it being a sunk cost, I view it as $5 rental ($20 if still in theatres) + $5 in snacks/drinks versus $50 for tickets/popcorn/drinks for wife and I at a theatre

I agree it’s not the same.
To me, the difference in sound/visual just usually doesn’t warrant the trade-offs I get with convenience at home.

Walking into a dark room to sit around and not talk to anyone is hardly what I would call a "public outing."

It's not a real comparison really. Everyone is going to have a TV set up at home, and of course the up front cost is going to be higher than going to one movie, but no one uses their home entertainment system just for movies and everyone in this country has some level of entertainment set up on their living room. No one would truthfully compare setting up a TV system at home to going to the movies.

Even afterwards, it was still pretty common. Jurassic Park only came out on home video after 16 months after its theatrical release.)
Jurassic Park being an extreme example Bc it was in theaters for a solid year or more.

A $20k home theater should provide a far more enjoyable experience than a movie theater.

I guess a lot of you anti-theater folks are gonna skip Top Gun when it comes out, too, eh?
