Oh, so directly participating in slavery isn’t a big deal now and shouldn’t be relevant to any story or individual.

I mean, it was certainly glossed over in The Patriot and its protagonist so he probably looks less shitty

And I say that as someone who loves that movie.

Pretty sure when Tavington is burning down the plantation he assumes the black folks are slaves, but the man that speaks up says they are “all free and work these lands” or something to that effect.

Probably more historically inaccurate and an effort to make the Martin character a better, more forward thinking man than “glossing” over Benjamin Martin’s relationship with the blacks on his land.

Now far more attention is paid to box office results than things like film quality.

The Banshees of Irisherin and TAR, those massive box office juggernauts.

Have only seen Mav from that list.

Saw Glass Onion thought it was weird seeing the bond dude with a southern accent.

Top Gun is possibly the only other movie I care to see on that list.

I have heard of 21 of those and seen 5 (Elvis, RRR, Banshees, Avatar 2, and Glass Onion: Knives Out). Didn’t think any of the ones I watched were that great.

I think it's an explicit attempt to make the viewers not think about the main protagonist being a slave owner. There are no records of a large Southern plantation owner hiring free blacks to work the land in the 1700s.

Of this list I’ve seen 10, plus about 2/3 of each Elvis and Pinnochio. I’d have EEAAO on top and would have Top Gun in my top 3 or 4 (most likely).

This list doesn’t strike me as egregious at all. Going to watch Aftersun and Tar this week and have high hopes for both.

The big misses, based on what I’ve seen, are The Menu, Cha Cha Real Smooth and On the Count of Three.

They should treat the limited release stuff like G5 and put like one or two in at most.

How would you do that? Glass Onion was in 600 theaters, a limited release, but has likely been seen by more people than anything else on the list not named Avatar or Maverick. Or RRR, at least internationally.

The Banshees of Inisherin was a limited release, but it's available to anyone on HBO Max, and its reputation and the conversation around it has increased a great deal since it landed on HBO.

The Fablemans expanded into a wide release with roughly 1,500 theaters. Barely anyone saw it. Does it still fall under "limited release stuff" because so few moviegoers seem to be aware of it?

Everyone has pretty easy access to all these movies, outside of maybe 4 of them. Don't know why this would be a good idea unless you (general) would just prefer the list feel more populist.

Not to hijack, but, the first time I watched The Patriot with my son I made sure to point out that they would have been slaves and the director clearly wanted the audience to avoid thinking of Benjamin Martin as a slave owner. Also, if the British had burned down a bunch of civilians in a church, we’d still be calling them “church burners” to this day. I still love the movie, but it will never be in an AP top 10 poll from 2000.

As far as the Woman King and Nope, they both have pretty mediocre scores on IMDb (6.7,6.9), so IMHO anyone calling this poll out has a legit point about why they are in the top 10. I haven’t seen either, and probably won’t. BTW, Maverick has an 8.3.

Is the AP using ESG to evaluate this?
