The Thing From Another World (1951)

One of my most favorite things in this world.

Howard Hawks takes John Campbell's sci-fi story and turns it into his favorite theme (barricaded men under assault), which he would revisit in Rio Bravo, El Dorado, and Rio Lobo. Then John Carpenter takes it and runs with it in Assault on Precinct 13, before he completes the circle by remaking Hawks' and Campbell's The Thing.

That's so funny because I think of Howard Hawks as a cleancut Carry Grant director.

Good lineup. I would replace It Came From Outer Space with When Worlds Collide.

The moon flicka shows must not have been popular or the opposite and they were too expensive because I don't think I caught any of those on tv growing up.

Countdown, from 1968, is the only one I remember seeing. I know I've seen it, but don't remember anything about it, except for Cann in the space suit. This Roger Ebert review makes me think I may have only seen part of it and quit watching.

quote:

July 1, 1977

Some great directors are born; others are made. If we can Judge by Robert Altman's “Countdown,” which plays Friday as part of the Altman festival at the Biograph, he belongs in the second category. It's a movie that's fitfully interesting, often boring, and gives no hint at all of such riches to come as “MASH,” “Nashville,” and “Three Women."

It's the story of a last-minute American attempt to beat the Russians to the moon, and stars such then-unknowns as James Caan, Robert Duvall and Ted Knight (prophetically playing a self-important public relations spokesman for the U.S. space program). The story, such as it is, revolves around the bitterness of Duvall, a trained military pilot, when Caan, a civilian geologist, is picked to man the mission.

But the film seems oddly unfocused, and the first hour is given over to barren stretches of flat, everyday dialog. There's no tension, no real conflict, no humor, no suspense. “Countdown” doesn't feel like a space adventure, but like an oddly low-keyed exercise in corporate infighting. ...

Wikipedia makes it sound like Warner Bros wouldn't let him do his, "Actors talking over each other" thing.

quote:

Production

Countdown benefited from the cooperation of NASA, lending facilities to enhance the production.[1] Altman was fired as director of the film[citation needed] for delivering footage that featured actors talking over each other. While this went on to be a signature invention of Altman, it was so new that studio executives considered it incompetence rather than an attempt to make scenes more realistic. In the documentary "Altman," the director explains that he was "just trying to get the illusion of reality" but that he was fired for "overlapping dialogue."

The silent, French movie coming on at 4:30AM CDT, A Trip to the Moon, might be worth DVR'ing.

quote:

At a meeting of the Astronomy Club, its president, Professor Barbenfouillis,[b][c] proposes an expedition to the Moon. After addressing some dissent, five other brave astronomers—Nostradamus,[d] Alcofrisbas,[e] Omega, Micromegas,[f] and Parafaragaramus—agree to the plan. They build a space capsule in the shape of a bullet, and a huge cannon to shoot it into space. The astronomers embark and their capsule is fired from the cannon with the help of "marines", most of whom are played by a bevy of young women in sailors' outfits. The Man in the Moon watches the capsule as it approaches, and it hits him in the eye. ...
Wikipedia-A Trip to the Moon

The movies on Tuesday July 23rd should be more interesting.

would've been funny if the first thing the aliens did to Richard Dreyfuss' character on Close Encounters is make him their slave. Why the hell would he just go off with a bunch of aliens?

DVRing this for sure.

Love 2010. Perfectly cast. Just wish they'd had time to get into all of the relationships, and the race with the Chinese to the obelisk.

They didn't need to add the schmaltzy world-peace message at the end, but I love the movie.

shite this thread is confusing...need to date the entires.

I thought that the latest info post was basically for the whole month because I said to myself: "There's no way Star Wars, Star Trek 2, Close Encounters, Logan's Run, Westworld, and 2010 would all air on the same night!"

The I actually checked my guide an it's fricking true.

This has to be up there with one of the finest arrays of programming in a single night on TCM I can remember.

Is Logan's Run supposed to be good? Or is it supposed to be campy good? Or is it just incredibly bad in retrospect? The whole scene with Box is laughably bad including the hamhanded way they got Jessica naked.

Logan's Run is classic now because of how bad and campy it is. It's kind of cult-status ish now. But back then it was basically a big budget sci-if action film.

You have to remember, this is BEFORE Star Wars....one year to be exact, but it looks light years away technically and storywise. It still had a lot of 1960s, Planet of the Apes type vibe to it.

It's laughable now, but I'd bet the filmmakers of Logans Run thought they were making a very serious, good movie...

It's quite remarkable, in just 4 or 5 years after, you get the likes of Empire Strikes Back, Star Trek 2, Blade Runner and The Road Warrior. All very different in settings and scope and story, but the advances in special effects were almost mind blowing.

I'd say only 2001 and THX 1138 had anything comparable in the 60s or 70s before Star Wars

I watched Logan's Run on netflix a few weeks ago. It was pretty good. I couldn't get over Basil Exposition being the lead though.
