The overall story works but has just been copied a millions times since so it's watered down. I just can't imagine seeing Logan's Run then seeing SW 11 months later. It's like a 11 inch b&w TV to 55'' 4k difference.

Close Encounters has some of my favorite cinematography ever--especially the first 1/4 of the film.
The blocking and lighting and authenticity of the air traffic control scene alone is pretty stunning. Add the UFO chases and that wicked 70s lighting is pretty great.
Also watch for all the mini tracking shots Speileberg does. It's so unnoticeable to the naked eye, but he holds shots sometimes 30-50 seconds or more without cutting, but he keeps the camera moving a lot and shifts focus so you don't even realize it. I was stunned when I learned of these techniques he was doing before and now I can't help but notice the mastery of the camera work. It's actually a very old technique from the classic movie days when there were far far les cuts than now.

Been a while since I've sat and watched Close Encounters all the way through. It's soooo good

Damn, even TCM has to show the Lucas updated New Hope with stupid CGI creatures walking around for no reason.

I would imagine Lucas has all but banned the real version from ever appearing on TV again. Of all places, I figured TCM would be the hold out.

IIRC, Lucas stated that all previous prints and files of the originals had been destroyed. He may have gone as far as claiming that they were destroyed in the process of updating them (which would be complete bullshite).
