WILMINGTON -- The locally filmed television series “Swamp Thing” has found itself bogged down by some unexpected news.
The currently in-production project is being shut down earlier than expected as its producer, Warner Bros., evaluates the future of its DC Universe streaming service, on which the series was scheduled to premiere May 31, according to several sources within the local industry.
Actress Virginia Madsen confirmed the shut down Wednesday morning on Instagram with a post that read: “I’m beyond sad. What a terrible decision. We have been cut to the core by those who have never set foot into the Swamp. And despite the rule I am going to use the hashtag. #swampthing.”
The post was deleted minutes later.
Local crew members were notified of the unexpected development Tuesday night, and were told the project would wrap production on episode 10 and then halt as writers and producers rewrite an ending. Initially, the show was scheduled to film 13 episodes through May.

That doesn't sound good.

Interesting to see Swamp Thing, because he's in Louisiana IIRC, but no fricking way I'd pay for this. Only Netflix/Hulu gets my money year round. HBO gets it for new GOT and that's it.

Then don't. It's not like you have to buy an annual contract.

Swamp Thing would be an amazing series. It's one of the best things DC, or any comic company, has ever done.

I think that's the issue, people aren't grabbing it up.
$7.99 for a very finite library and it doesn't release seasons at once?

Doesn't help that Disney just announced Disney + for $6.99 with a massive library that includes Marvel and Star Wars.

I subscribed for Titans but canceled after the finale. I'll 'stream' their shows, but DC isn't getting any more of my money.

WarnerMedia has been rumored to be setting up their own streaming service to rival Disney+ so I wouldn't be surprised if the DC streaming service is eventually rolled into a package that includes Warner Bros, HBO, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network and whatever else they control.

See I'm waiting for doom patrol to end and then I was going to do the same for swamp thing but well damn.

Would make them much more competitive right away.

Man, if they could just release Monstervision on a service I'd keep that around to watch with the kids on Friday nights.

I'm not really stunned to hear this. The DC shows, from what I understand, haven't been awful but they haven't exactly been setting the world on fire either. Stick them on a greater WB + streaming system and they would be fine original content.

Swamp Thing is still premiering at the end of the month.
Titans Season 2 is still shooting.
Worst case scenario is that some of the future series will end up on the new AT&T/WB tiered streaming service. That won't be until after Swamp Thing has run its entire season and most-probably after the second season of Titans airs in the Fall.
They're still adding the animated features as they make them (the new Justice League Fatal Five movie with the original CN cast was just added) and they just added thousands of comics to the library with more to come.
If it gets absorbed by the new streaming service then fine, but I'm not cancelling my subscription.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the original 13-episode order for the project has been cut to 10 after experiencing creative differences with its home at Warners-backed streaming platform DC Universe. The series will stick with its planned May 31 premiere date.
quote:
The news of the episode reduction happens to come as DC Universe parent company WarnerMedia is plotting a larger direct-to-consumer streaming platform. The OTT service, expected to launch in the fourth quarter, will feature scripted originals, as well as content from corporate siblings HBO, Turner's TBS and TNT, among others.
quote:
The idea of having dueling streaming services — even though DC Universe is considered a niche platform — could be a potential wrinkle for WarnerMedia. DC Universe — which does not release subscriber numbers — features a massive library of comics via its proprietary comic reader, which could pose a problem if its parent company wants to fold that service in with its larger OTT service. The addition of the comic library was designed to help DC Universe take on Marvel Unlimited. Also unclear is if DC Universe content would be exclusive to that platform before it hits WarnerMedia's unnamed service and if the DC label could be an additional monthly charge on top of a base fee.
For now, it's business as usual at DC Universe, which recently expanded its availability to Xbox users. Next up, it has the animated series Harley Quinn and Young Justice: Outsiders poised to join a scripted roster that includes Titans (already renewed for season two) and the critically praised Doom Patrol. Also ordered to series at the platform are Geoff Johns' Stargirl, which is expected in 2020.

Indeed! The Moore version is hailed as the best (rightfully so), but man there were many iterations of it that were great as well. Love this series

Saga of the Swamp Thing is the first series I ever bought every volume for in graphic novel form.
I read the run every time this year when it feels like everything is green and in bloom again.
I wish more people knew how great it is and they could do it justice in film.
