But incredibly stupid IMO. Lets go shoot a federally protected reptile with little chance of recovery

Yep if he would have killed the gator, the gator would have sunk and he would have never found him. Shooting a gator in open water without something close to guestimate where he is, is not a good idea. The only time I have shot them like that was when they were close to the bank in the shallow waters so that I could hook them with a hooking pole.

They are definitely my favorites.

They were funny as hell. "How do you know when it's raining 'cats and dogs'?" "When you step in a poodle!"

One of those brothas had arms like Aaron Neville.

...on water where the bullet could ricochet and kill an innocent person. That's highly irresponsible. But the shot was amazing nonetheless.

They have got to be the first black gator fishermen I have seen. Also found it funny that Kliebert's concoction was something special. Ain't nothing special about rotten meat. We used to let our chicken marinate in the sun on a hot tin roof for two days before baiting That funk was hard to get off your hands.

I was thinking the same thing.

Yep, we used to use gloves and we had soap on the boat. That stuff gets ridiculous.

He also preps the meat for packaging. Sure hope he uses soap.

Jr Edwards has been doing this for so long there is no chance he would lose the gator. Didnt you see the three pronged hook he welded for just such a situation. And kill someone else? Jr would see if there was someone in a boat 180 degrees away.

I would have honestly thought it was illegal to shoot a free swimming alligator. Taken from the wildlife and fisheries website:

Firearms
Firearms (except shotguns) may be used to dispatch alligators while on hook and line (see
Fishing Method above) or to harvest free swimming alligators. Harvesting free swimming
alligators with firearms may increase chances of losing alligators. Extreme caution should be
used when harvesting free swimming alligators to ensure that alligators can be retrieved once
harvested. Alligator hunters should practice firearm safety at all times and pay close attention to
ricochet hazards. Harvesting free swimming alligators may not be permitted if hunting on public
lands or public lakes.

He's not the only one that has been doing it for a while. I did it for 14 years straight and know others who have done it for longer than him. I had 15ft hooking poles with huge treble (three pronged hooks) on the end of it also.

And it is easy to lose a gator when shot free swimming. Once it's killed it sinks in about 1-2 minutes and then it sits on the bottom. It won't come up until after it goes bad in a few days. The current (if there is a tide or current) on the bottom of the water can also move the gator away from where you think you shot it. If you don't know exactly where the gator is, it's like looking for a needle in a hay stack.
