I've liked everything about this except Krypto. Gunn is nailing the aesthetic of what Superman actually is.

If anyone can pull off something as inherently campy as Krypto its Gunn, but its a huge risk and I just don't know

Well, we then saw the movies and they were trash. I was concerned going into it that they were going to overly make it like The Dark Knight, and some of that concern turned out to be justified.

It has definitely made the film more interesting to small children, that's for sure, but it's rated PG-13 so...

On the movie side, they've always suffered from the idea that fans want every DC property to be dark and brooding.

Batman is dark and brooding. Superman isn't.

That Superman movie (or movies) already exists….Superman 1 & 2. Nolan used those movies as inspiration for Begins and TDK. I think there was still an appetite for an updated Reeve/Donner Superman. Superman Returns just missed the mark completely with the script and casting.

Another?

Yes, Clark's son is a flaming "bisexual" leftist in the comics and was "Superman" for a while recently (might still be, I stopped paying attention).

So there have allegedly been test screenings. Reports are kinda unreliable, a bunch of people with strong Snyder fanboy stuff in their twitter are saying it sucked, a few other people are saying its great, and everything in between.

There is unfortunately a big leak from it on who is playing Jor-el and I wish I hadn't seen it

I think we're getting a new trailer this week at cinemacon. Hopefully updates on the rest of the slate

Some of the test screening rumors are that it is "goofy" and not "serious enough", which makes me wonder if any of these people have seen a James Gunn movie before

Exactly. I wouldn't worry about test screening reports. If you like Gunn's style, you'll likely enjoy Superman.

If this is the biggest complaint, I think this movie has potential.

This looks like a superhero movie from prior to X-Men in 2000 (and especially prior to Batman Begins).

This works with a silly comedy like Suicide Squad.

It's going to be a test of what audiences want.

The Comic movie world has changed a lot over the years, but a lot of the Marvel films have humor and silliness in them.

I think people are just conditioned to expect some things with DC.

Superman stories are silly, so Gunn’s style works for this world. Now, whether audiences like that or not remains to be seen. But Superman isn't meant to be dark.

This looks more than silly at time. The aesthetics and production look....childish, for lack of a better word.

The comic aesthetic works for comics but it rarely worked pre-X-men b/c it looks silly on screen. There's a reason why the X-men dropping the comic-faithful costumes was such a game changer. Wolvie's 90s-era costume only worked in Deadpool b/c it was a comedy, for example.

Superman's outfit is fine, but the whole aesthetic from the lighting to the way all the other "super" characters are dressed are a take. This is certainly a 180 from Snyder's aesthetic.

The first trailer was weak, I agree. We'll see if the aesthetic looks better in the new trailer. Some of those scenes almost looked like something from the CW

I'm not saying this is going to fail, be bad, etc.

I'm just saying I'm not sure if audiences are going to like it.

This is approaching, possibly bordering on, camp.

I get that Superman isn't meant to be dark, but that's why I've always personally wondered how he's remained popular. He's perfect with no peer, so where is the conflict (especially internal)? Where's the development (if he starts at perfect, there is nowhere to go)?

That's why I liked what MOS tried to do by building the character of Superman. Zach Snyder just probably wasn't the best guy to tell that sort of a nuanced story

+1 I've been a supporter of that film since day 1. Then BvS ruined it all

Another concern I have is does Gunn have too much on his plate? He was working on creature Commandos, Superman and Peacemaker, all while planning out the future of this studio. He's admitted himself that he's miserable right now.
