One of those horrible Disney direct to video sequels already did something like like this.

One of the step sisters had a redemption arc, there's a subplot where she fell in love with like a chubby commoner guy, basically a looks matched version of herself, but the mom was against it of course.

The step mother and one of the step sisters were still awful but Cinderella helped the other one and they reconciled.

I believe that the series (while still very much appropriate for younger teens) was targeted at an older crowd than the Karate Kid movies. I feel like that entire show was based off of a Youtube video (I think, it may have been a Twitter post or something similar) where someone did a very clever job of breaking down the original film to make Johnny come off as a semi-victim of Danny's bullying. In the series (I only watched the first 2 seasons), everything was morally grey. Every viewer could reasonably support either Team Danny or Team Johnny.

I think that morally grey type characters are generally more interesting than the typical straight up good/evil characters. So while I agree with other posters that this Cinderella type movie is most likely being made for nefarious reasons, I think that some of the reasoning is based on writers taking the easiest path towards making an interesting show. But the crowd for this Cinderalla movie is younger than the Karate Kid movies, and DEFINITELY younger than the series audience. I'm not sure that the intended audience for this Cinderalla film can really relate to morally grey characters, simply because of the inherent complexity of the characters. The moral greyness needs to come from complex situations, not from characters saving orphans from burning buildings and kicking puppies on their way out.
