Started this show last night. Not expecting to like it, actually expecting the worst.

To be honest, I really, really like it. Reminds me of Smallville. Luke Wilson is the Jonathan Kent of this show.

Thoughts on Season 2?

Sort of hit its peak with the introduction of Eclipso. The whittling away of the Junior JSA was a bit of a drag, hopefully they're moving past that.

The Bruce Gordon kid still creeps me the hell out.

I kind of liked last night's episode with Rick mistakenly beating his uncle to a bloody pulp. Not sure how they are going to fix the hour glass though.

I will say that Eclipso in the kid form is 10x more creepy than him in his regular form. His regular form looks kind off goofy if you ask me, but that kid is creepy as hell.

We did get the confirmation last night that Eclipso is indeed racist (because evidently being the epitome of evil wasn't enough).

But even with that, the show hasn't come close to reaching the CW level of wokeness yet. Stargirl and Superman & Lois have both been a pleasant surprise in the department.

Come on. His shtick is to find the mental weakness of each hero. With Beth it was her feeling of being an outsider who forced herself into the group. Eclipso doesn't give a shite about race or gender, but he'll use it to frick with the minds of his adversaries. He didn't bring up race/gender with Yolanda because he was working the guilt over killing Brainwave angle with her. With Beth it was that she was "a thief and a liar like the rest of her race, and a black girl stealing the name of a white male hero." And that was just a part of his guilt trip that included her fear of being the cause of her parents' divorce.

Like Eclipso gives a shite about the race of the JSA.

Im still enjoying it, But Beth/Dr. Midnight, is the most useless hero of any show ever written. When is the green lantern coming back? Or are we not getting her back until next season?

She's Velma without the charm.

I don't see the writers giving up that character. The goggles are the best writer's crutch since Austin Powers' Basil Exposition.

I agree that Eclipso doesn't/shouldn't give a crap about race or gender, he is just pure evil.

But the show did decide to make Beth's "weakness" the fact that, as you said, she was "a thief and a liar like the rest of her race, and a black girl stealing the name of a white male hero.", and they had her literally call him a racist.

There wasn't any past indication that she was worried that people thought about her in a negative black racial/stereotypical way until this event. They could've just stuck with the fact that she thought of herself as physically and maybe mentally weaker than the rest of the JSA, and wasn't fit to be the new Dr. Mid-Nite, which has been hinted at throughout the show.

But with that said, it's definitely very minor compared to the normal CW level of wokeness.

Wasn't Eclipso trapped in the early 1950's? That would be a convenient way to explain it.

Not sure how that would explain it. From what I've gathered so far, Eclipso knows your inner fears and desires, and uses them against you. I don't see how him being trapped ever since the early 50's would have any affect on Beth's inner fears.

I think that Beth had the least amount to work with and Eclipso had to expand on anything she had going on. Rick has guilt over befriending the monster that killed his parents, Yolanda has her murder of Brainwave. Beth has divorced parents and is socially awkward.

Great original JSA episode this week. When this show gets serious, it's really good.

Beth's big issue is feeling like an outsider but it's based in a practicality in dealing with the world. She knows she's a bit different and wishes the world liked her, but she is happier with herself than what the world would want to change her into in order to be liked. Because of this she's the only one (at least thus far) who was able to understand that what was happening to her while it was happening was due to Eclipso. Even Pat, with knowing full well of Eclipso's abilities, wasn't able to do that.

Because of all this I think Eclipso realized he had to cast a much wider net in order to influence Beth so he went for anything and everything (thief, black, girl, outsider, her fault her parents are divorcing, I think he may have even included a fat reference). If you go back and re-watch you should notice his attacks on the others are far more focused.

With all that said, I think it was a brilliant move for this character. It finally gives her a "win" on her own to help bring her more in balance to the others on the team.

I'm a bit on the fence about the conversation with her mother afterwards. Did it really need to happen? I think Beth would have been better off as a character if she were able to just see that stunt for what it was but she's only 15 (admitted during the episode) and the reinforcement by the mother could have been handled muuuuuuch worse.

Yeah, I really liked that episode, especially the JSA stuff. But I will say the JSA treated poor Pat like crap. They sure didn't think too highly of him. Even Starman didn't seem to respect him much. Or was that just Eclipso feeding into Pat's insecurities?
