Its amazing that they thought they could roll a soccer ball in front of a green screen then cgi an r2d2 head on it and a half arse background and think we would be impressed.

You know this board has gone to shite when people start arguing about the impracticalities of a lightsaber in a fantasy universe.

You must be new to fantasy/science fiction. Fantasy/science fiction create their own rules but must remain faithful to those rules. Breaking rules previously established is a huge error in this genre. The lightsabers are described in great detail throughout the books - the design, how they work, and their significance in the progress of a Jedi or a Sith. This ridiculous lightsaber seems to break the rules they have established. Because it is utterly impractical. They better address it in the movie.

Too bad the books aren't canon anymore.

I find the arguing funny

Star Wars is not SciFi, it's fantasy.
Your rules are as relevant as the books.

To be fair, I bet the majority in this thread couldn't tell the difference between SciFi and Fantasy

The same rules apply to Fantasy as to Sci Fi. You have to stick to the rules you create. Hence why I said Fantasy/Science Fiction. Did your brain just skip over the word "fantasy" in my post? I would say the rules apply even more to fantasy than to sci fi because you are even more reliant on the rules created by the author. This is fantasy 101.

I don't know how many times people have to tell you, but what is said in thr books is utterly irrelevant. They have as much relevance as fanfic.

And what rules are those? The books were once considered canon but Disney has come out and said that only Star Wars: Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels will be canon, aside from the movies.

I've decided that I refuse to ever accept that the books are not canon.

With all due respect, I don't think you know what you're talking about as well as you think you do.
Besides, rules are meant to be broken and occasionally ignored in order to serve the plot. As an SEC fan, you should know this.

Why do people care so much about us making fun of the lightsaber? It looks ridiculous. I have no idea if this movie will be good. It may be greatness. That lightsaber however looks horrible. It's a completely useless design that was created for the sole purpose to be different.

My take on the crossguard light saber. Nothing new here I am sure, just my thoughts:
There is a piece of metal that protrudes from the hilt which seems to nullify the point of it being a cross guard. However, in my nerdiness I remember from somewhere that there are a couple of metals in the SW universe that are impervious to a light saber blade. That said, if that little piece of metal is made of that material why not make the entire guard of that material?
There being small saber blades on the side of the saber make it impossible for there to be a lot of twisting and spinning of the saber in the user's hands. A cross guard is a feature of a heavy sword like a claymore. A heavy sword is not used with quickness and agility like we see light saber's used. It is a blunt force sword that has a cross guard.
The only advantage to the saber cross guard as seen in the trailer would be quick, jabbing actions when tied up with an opponent.

If i was a fledgling kid that figured out how to use the force without much guidance and built my own light-saber, i would think that thing was awesome.

Says the person who saw 3 seconds of it in a mini clip without sound or purpose.

Says the person who completely disregarded the fact that I said the movie could be good. BASED ON WHAT I'VE SEEN SO FAR, that lightsaber looks like shite. IMO
ETA: BTW, episodes 1-3 were STAR WARS also.
