It really does sound like a mess.
My question is since you're bringing somebody back from the dead, why not just have made it Snoke who is such a badass that he can cheat death like that?
Hell, Darth Plagueis is sitting right there in the lore...reveal that Snoke and he are the same person!
If the three trilogies are supposed to flow into one giant "saga" then bringing Palpatine back like this destroys the flow of the whole thing.
I have to imagine that JJ doesn't try to explain this because A) He's terrible at that and B) Disney hopes to milk people out of more money with media that goes into better detail when they find some writers willing and capable of giving it a go of making sense out of this sludge.

Palpatine's intentions aren't even really made clear either. So he was controlling Snoke in TLJ and wanted Ben to kill Rey...but wants her to take over the Empire now? But not really?
From that same person -
"First [Palpatine] wants Rey to kill him, then when she doesn't, Rey just reflects his lightning back at him until he dies. They don't fight Palps. Ben gets yeeted into the Pit"
Palpatine tells Kylo to kill Rey and Kylo basically refuses (he doesn't outright say it though). Kylo is done taking orders.

What I don't understand is how Rey can be a freaking Palpatine. Did he have a love child with Padme when we weren't looking? The dude was portrayed as asexual for the entirety of the franchise.

Is she of his lineage?

Rey is Palpatine's granddaughter.

I'm disappointed that they didn't go full soap opera and reveal that he had a good twin.

From someone who saw the film last night -
Movie doesn't explain how Palpatine is back. Palpatine created Snoke and there are a couple tanks with Snoke clones in them. Nothing else is explained.
Well then...

The final scene between Rey and Kylo -
"Ben climbs out of the pit, sees fallen Rey from a distance and rushes over as best he can, limping. He gets to her and pulls her into his lap and holds her to his chest, heartbroken. Then he calms himself, leans her back, lays hands, and revives her. When she comes back, she holds his hand, looks into his eyes, smiles huge, calls him Ben, and they have a solid full contact kiss for about 2 seconds? He smiles back. Then he abruptly falls over dead, she touches him, and he vanishes."
Keep in mind this will be the third time he dies in this movie.

When did their relationship develop to get here? I’m not buying it...

When Rey and Ben shared that moment when his shirt was off.
Obviously!

Ok this can't be real.

Absolute proof they had no intention of Snoke being killed off. This such a weak and shitty way of rationalizing his death.
Yeah, Palpatine, the man who was secretly a sith lord for decades in his rise to emperor status for some reason then decides he needs to create this deliberately disfigured and ugly Clones to continue his will.
They should have just made Snoke wear a t-shirt that says "I'm ugly and disfigured, so I MUST be the bad guy."
Such shallow and vain writing by shallow and vain people.
Palpatine was never a thought until AFTER TLJ as a means to try and mend the incredible divide that was created. Just a cheap and lazy way of doing it. Disney needs to sell the IP immediately. Let someone else make the movies/shows that's completely independent of the Disney horseshite.

Holy fricking shite. They took a potentially all time great villain in Kylo in Episode 7 and slowly made him a fricking pussy. One of the worst character arcs of all time.

Absolutely real and previous leaks support it. Maybe not the kiss or the exact details, but definitely enough to see the possibility.

This is fact in case anyone doubts this. It's obvious based on the way the movies play out, but even Ian himself was surprised when he received a call from JJ.
quote:
It was a total surprise when about a year ago I had an email from J.J. saying, ‘Is there a good time to call you? And where should I call you?’” McDiarmid recalled. “So I emailed back and said, ‘Such and such time, and this is the best phone number to get me.’ And then he called me straight away and said, ‘We’re thinking of bringing back the Emperor. How do you feel?’ So I controlled myself and said, ‘Sounds like a great idea!’ And I realized my voice had shot up there, and I thought, ‘He won’t be able to cast me if I speak like that.’ I said, ‘Well, that’s wonderful.’”
quote:
McDiarmid continued, “And he said, ‘Well, we’re thinking about bringing him back, because it would be just great to round off those nine episodes sort of the way we began in terms of the Dark Side.’ And that’s where it started.”

It's too late. The damage is done. Carrie Fisher is dead and I doubt Harrison Ford would ever agree to return to the role of Han Solo. They had the opportunity of a lifetime and completely blew it by giving the reins of the horse to a woman who wouldn't have been anything more than some Hollywood big shot's personal secretary if not for Steven Spielberg.

So what exactly did Luke accomplish?
He turned his father, the most ruthless character in the galaxy, from the dark side through compassion and unwavering faith.
Then attempted to murder his adolescent nephew for having bad dreams about the dark side.
The rebels were blowing the DSII anyway, so his only major contribution is creating Kylo. He's like a lesser version of Padme.

The kiss was definitely in the most recent batch of leaks. Although the notion of Ben climbing out of the pit to revive a dead Rey, kissing her, and then inexplicably dying (AGAIN) was so ridiculous that many people didn't think it was legitimate.

You're not giving him enough credit.
He also turned his back on the galaxy and sat around sulking while the First Order came to power.
Judging by the short work his nephew make of Snoke, Luke could have flown over and whipped his arse at any time.
