My wife was looking for a movie to watch tonight and saw it on the shelf. She hasn't seen the first one (of the new ones), should I make her watch the first one first? I can't remember if there's anything that would throw her off if she hasn't seen the first one.

Nah, she could watch this sans the first one easily enough.

Good movie, don't late the haters throw you off.

No but there are going to be a lot of spoilers for the first movie,... "you weren't ready for the chair".

First movie is worth watching for the corvette heist alone.. plus she won't know that Kirk's mom is Dr Alison Cameron and his dad is Thor...

I wouldn't say you NEED to, but the first one is better, IMO.

I liked the 2nd better despite the ...hmmm...moments.

I feel like they missed out on an opportunity to do something original. I thought it was good, I just couldn't get over the fact that they used too many aspects from the original Khan.

Thinking back on that movie, that one scene that I won't specifically name towards the end felt cheesy. They should have left that out.

first one has some really great moments tho..

"your dad was captain of a starship for 12 minutes, he saved 800 lives, including yours and your mothers, I dare you to do better"

you have to admit that was pretty well done.

then there's the explanation of "bones", stuff like that gets fleshed out and makes it pretty dam satisfying.

overall ST:Into Darkness just doesn't have as many good lines and try's too hard to fit into the movie genre with stuff like the really forced scene in the warp core at the end.

didn't really care that much about the 'new Kahn' story line either, making Kahn look like a good guy just does't fit.

I much preferred Into Darkness. I thought it was more in the spirit of the series and the actors were better in their respective roles.

There were a few moments, but overall, I thought it was pretty good.

I see the flaws in this movie, but it's pretty damn entertaining regardless. Cumberbatch as Khan is just fantastic, and definitely made me want to see him in as many things as possible. Just a great villain, and they should have been open from the start that Cumberbatch was Khan.

I agree. The fake name part was essentially a worthless part of the movie. He could have been khan the whole time and the story could have been told better. I actually thought the warp core scene was good? And cumberbatch did a great job.

nothing wrong w/ Cumberbatch's performance, he just wasn't the villain in the movie, that was Marcus, didn't really care for the whole Starfleet Admiral goes off the track and starts killing everybody schtik, it just didn't work.

The epic fight at the end with Spock didn't tip you off that he was the villain.

So looks like we'll go with Star Trek. If it's not too late maybe we'll hit em both.

Thanks guys.

Nope, Marcus was what we call Big Bad Wannabe. He wanted to use Khan to further his own goals, but Khan was the Big Bad all along. He still wants to wipe out all of humanity, and would have done so eventually. Marcus thought that he was playing Khan, but Khan really had it all under control all along. Khan is the Big Bad of the film.

Kahn's entire "war on Starfleet" was a justifiable gambit to get "his family" back from the "bad man" who wanted to use him/them as WMD's.

When Spock beat him by outsmarting his "2 dimensional thinking" that was really the end of the story, beyond that it was just gratuitous action and fight scenes with the small plot twist of resurrected tribbles.

I wish the "scene" at the end would have been a very menacing angry growl instead of a scream. Would have been fitting.

I'm sad as hell they destroyed the Vengeance. It would've been cool as hell to see that replace the enterprise or save it for a rainy day when they're really in trouble and need backup.

Look at this....

It's such a badass ship.

It had so much potential and then collapsed and shat the bed at the end.

I will say, I really do like the new cast.
