Any movies or all the faves series?
Most of the favorites are series
My personal rank for top tier is:
Arthdal
My Country
Everything else I have seen series-wise is really really good though

So far I agree with this. I liked Mr. Sunshine a lot too but there were points where it dragged along a bit and I think supporting characters were cast better than the two leads.

If you can find War of the Arrows, watch it. The Admiral is another good one. The Koreans had these turtle ships that were devastating in close combat. Mostly round ships that they could spin to create non-stop cannon fire in any direction.

I just finished Arthdal and really liked it. Took a while to figure out who/what each tribe was, though. And Taealha
I'll take Xabara

The lists that come back on a search for best Korean shows are all awful

Rugal is pretty good - similar to uncanny counters in its setup

I'm almost caught up on Sisyphus. It's been good - a lot like Dark, though not nearly as complex. And I think there have been 2-3 episodes that dragged a bit. But now I'm actually looking forward to watching the last few episodes after having to wait for them to drop.

Really enjoying My Country.
Biggest challenge is figuring out who's who and remembering character names with subtitles. My Country has been easier than Arthdal.

For Viki users The Slave Hunters is a very good show on many levels. It is Viki Premium, but you can get a free week and cancel if it doesn’t work for you.

I started reading episode recaps and that helped a lot. I use dramabeans just because it’s the first one that came up but I’ve seen others too. It also helps when the translation is a bit off.

Just so people don't go in with wrong expectations and get disappointed, I wouldn't put them in the same category. Dark is hard scifi where the plot is the star. With Sisyphus scifi time travel is the setting, but it's driven by great characters/actors. Park and Sigma are great villains.

Good point. There are similar time travel elements with the protagonists trying to change the future, paradoxes, etc. But Sis is definitely more about the two main characters. And with Dark you never really knew if there was a villain or not.

We should have an “introduction” to South Korean writing style so that newcomers understand what to expect
1. The episodes are usually longer
2. In most of the series they REALLY invest time in world building and character development in the first couple of episodes. The “plot” usually picks up around episode 3.
3. They like to put 2-3 “sub-arcs” in a season. The big shows usually do this every 6 episodes (if there are 18 episodes, for instance)
4. The plot is secondary to the characters. The South Koreans LOVE great characters. They will take time to make us understand motivations and backstories.
5. They love the heroes journey and hot women
6. They don’t freaking care about SJW bullshite. Nothing is “shoehorned”
7. MOST series (not all) are only 1 season. But ALL series seem to have a VERY concrete ending.

I might add is there can be a “campiness” to positive emotional responses. This is a cultural thing (according to a Korean family I know), but I recommended Uncanny Counters to a buddy and he said that bothered him a bit.
Also intimate physical contact between sexes is rare, but the harsh realities of humanity, ie. war, slavery, and murder, among others, they pull no punches.

I read that most have one writer (or possibly one team) and director for the entire series as opposed to something like Game of Thrones where you had meandering plots and some episodes seemed out of place or were much higher/lower in quality.

Just adding a few more points about most of these Korean series. The scenery is typically awesome and the acting and writing is simply fantastic. You can really "feel" the emotions of the actors and the plot and storylines are extraordinary. Sometimes it's a little hard to follow along remembering names, etc. but you catch on and catch up as you progress through the series. It's easy to get hooked on these series.

Yeah I assumed the campiness was an Asian thing. And I've also noticed that (for better or worse) there's no sex.
