So why is the movie even called Battleship?

Seems like they paid unnecessary licensing fees to make an alien invasion movie

Makes no sense to me either. Are there really people that are going to watch the movie just because it's got a passing resemblance to the board game?

I posted this in that other Battleship thread.
I'm not sure about this but from what I have heard when the alien invasion begin in the film the invaders erect a force field around their mother ship in order to keep the humans from getting to them. When they do this they end up trapping one battle group inside the force field zone consisting of a number of ships that one would start off with when playing Battleship, it is then up to this one group of ships to take down the alien flagship.

When I first heard they were making it I imagined a serious Down Periscope. I'll catch it on HBO.

I watched it the other night.
Spoilers
They un-retire a Battleship that is currently a museum to kill the alien ship.
They use Tsanmi warning Buoys to create a grid and then fire using this grid.
G11 miss
B34 Miss
h12 hit
etc...
It wasn't the worst thing ever, but not that good. Though I saw a crappy cam version.

This too, a carrier, two destroyers, an escort (no sub) and a battleship.

I mean, truthfully it sounds like a fun plot. Until you realize how stupid the aliens must be to accidentally trap an enemy battlegoup inside the only place that their mothership is vulnerable when they are in the middle of the freaking ocean.

This movie will bomb big time.

Spoilers again
Not in the middle , Hawaii is trapped (mainly Pearl Harbor), as that is where the beacon comes from, the Navy trapped in the field is the multi-national training fleet that was still close to the island when the field went up.
They keep the ships that could actually hurt them inside, and they do serious damage before a weakness is found.
Best part is the retired sailors, taking control of the USS Missouri to help out.

So apparently they have thought of everything....interdasting.

They should have just called this thing "Battle: Los Angeles 2"

I liked Battle. Mainly because I think it did exactly what it set out to do, and what I wanted to see with that movie.

this movie would be shitloads better if it was just 2 fleets of 5 shooting at each other for 2 hours
