You know who else wouldn't be bad as Holden Caulfield?

Great question.
Jesse Eisenberg would be good. Same attitude as in "The Social Network".
But I guess Holden was younger than him...but still might work.

Agreed.
The only guy who MIGHT have been able to pull it off would have been a young Leonardo DiCaprio. Some of the suggestions in here have made me shudder.
