Total Recall is a lot more intelligent than people give it credit for. The script itself is very smart, but it was acted and directed like an acion movie, so sometimes the sublety is smashed over. It was a virtual vacation. Watch it again and look for the clues, you'll see.

hafta rewatch that sometime... been a while... if i remember correctly tho... when they were setting up the vacation.. they also show the ruins where they started up the reactor in the same scene.
All in all, one of my favorite Arnold movies. I do most of my Arnold quotes from that one.

" I'm not Quade, I'm HOW Saahh."
"Let's do it, Let's move to Maaaarsss"
"You blew my covah! They kill you allll"
"TWO WEEKS"

And Quato === movie star icon!!

The movie is full of great quotes:
"Get you ahss to Mahs."
"Benny scrreeeeeew yoooooou"

But when people says its a virtual vacation, do you mean that the virtual vacation is happening exactly as it should, or it went horribly wrong and he is about to be lobotomized?

This for me is the actual debate. No way do I believe he was ever actual on Mars, but I do think it is highly likely that something could have gone wrong during the "trip".

can't be a dream because every detail of every moment of the story didn't focus on arnold's character(s)

Interesting theory and that could be a bad arse movie, but I don't think its necessarily means its not a dream. Havn't you had dreams about other people before?

I never looked at it that way before. To me it was either reality or the Rekall program gone wrong. I never thought it would be Rekall program gone wrong vs the correct programmed vacation. I need to watch the movie again.

I don't see how it was a dream.

Watched it again today. In the scene where Quaid freaks out at recall...After they put him back to sleep, sales guy is bitching out the doctor who then tells sales guy

"He's been to mars before, we haven't implanted the program yet"

She says his mind is a mess and implanted with false memories.

Sales guy realizes that this is a dangerous situation. Sales guy tells her to clean up everything about Quaids visit to recall and to put him in a cab. Quaid wakes up in a cab with no idea where he is at.

I don't know about you guys, but when I dream, I don't swap between scenes of different people and story lines. If the director meant for it to be a dream, he failed.

He might as well had Quaid step out the shower and say it was all a dream like they did on Dallas.

calm down slap nut. I read the thread. There were two or three things mentioned yet none were conclusive. This guy seems to have it all figured out. Just want to know which clues he is talking about.

Try not acting like a bitch.

This is just like the League of Their Own debate. The movie clearly intends us to think one thing, while debate, speculation and boredom have people think something else after the fact.

I haven't seen anything in the movie that makes us think it was a dream. I think this is all speculation after the fact.

A guy works for The Agency. He is altered in order to go undercover in the Mars mutant resistance or whatever. He likes himself better as that person. And decides to stay that way.

Most common evidence:

1. "That's a new one- blue sky on Mars." In the Rekall office.

2. On the screen an image flashes by of the reactor seen later in the movie.

3. The image of the woman on the screen is exactly the visage of Melina.

4. Later in the movie, when Dr. Edgemar appears, he says that if quaid kills him, that one minute he'll be the hero of the resistance and the next he'll be Cohaagen's bosom buddy.

5. The movie fades to white instead of black to signify waking up.

Also, In the special limited edition the director says it is a dream.
