A big part of why it went south was when contracts had a "paid by the joke clause." I'll try and find the article on it when I get home.

another show out there (doesn't necessarily have to be a comedy) that was really good and just turned south quickly?

Scrubs season 8-9

I actually watched 9 first cuz I was board and didn't think it was that bad. Tried to rewatch it after watching seasons 1-8 and it was unbearable

To be fair that was a different situation. Season 9 had different writers,a different set, different network, and mostly a different cast. But yes you are right it's not nearly as good as the real 8 seasons of Scrubs.

As a standalone single season show, it's actually pretty good. I just watched it on Netflix. And I enjoyed it a lot more than I remembered.

It was just a let down after the finish of season 8. Lotta people resented it just because they thought the finale was too perfect and didn't wanna ruin it. I'm glad they tried it. Didnt taint Scrubs at all for me.

Is it still a big deal to host?
Not what I'm saying at all.

The host has saved the show, for those that turned out well.

The cast isn't making it work.

But this is a very weak cast. The hosts are saving them.

True...sorta. Hader, Kenan, Seth, Sudeikis, and even Moynihan are pretty legit though

The 90s were great because of the writers on the show. It is perceived to be great because of the success of the cast after they left (Sandler, Spade, Myers, etc). David Spade barely saw air time and couldn't write for shite but people think he was a huge part of the show. He gained popularity from movies and that perception got skewed. Outside of Ferrell, the 2000s cast have been fairly weak in terms of success outside the show. Fallon was horrible in everything until he got his own show.

The current cast is just awful though except for maybe Sudekis but he isn't even that funny on the show. I just like his movies.

Season 9 is terrible during segments with JD & Turkelton. In season 9, JD was so gay, he actually made Turk gay.
"It's not fair, you get to see him naked."

I don't even understand why Faison agreed to say that line.

Once JD departs, I think season 9 is ok. I didn't like it upon the first viewing but with each rewatch, the new characters have grown on me.

I think the new guys were just beginning to hit their stride when the show was axed.

Cast is good. It's the writing that sucks.

Would the Stefon stuff be even remotely funny without Hader?

I'm just glad Kristen Wiig's gone.

This. Tommy Lee Jones and I shared a face when her and Will Ferrell were going through their "comedy routine" at the Golden Globes back in January.

People probably think those older shows were so great because the cast back then all went on to do big things.

So you sit there and say, "Man that was an all-star cast" when in reality they may not have been all stars when the show aired, but they were later on.

Every generation thinks the prior generation of SNL was glorious. No one is ever happy with the current SNL.

yep...

Dana Carvey
Nora Dunn
Phil Hartman
Jan Hooks
Victoria Jackson
Jon Lovitz
Dennis Miller
Mike Myers
Kevin Nealon

I thought the late 80's was the best it ever was. Even the women were good. But Nealon, Hartman and Lovitz along with the GOAT Dana Carvey (not much career afterwards but he was perfect for SNL instead of those more celebrated who used it as a stepping stone.) And the addition of Myers made it at its apex IMO. The writing was great.

How Fallon ever got his own show is beyond me. Guy ruined just about every skit he was in. And how good was Taxi? I mean, am I right?

SNL might not ever recover from having Tina Fey as head writer.

I agree with this. Maybe it's a little comedic sexism but I feel that these cast members are legit. Hader and Sudeuikis have established themselves outside of SNL with movie roles, they are the best SNL has right now. Kenan and Moynihan are underrated IMO. Pharaoh is beginning to establish himself, but will have to expand outside of his impersonations, though they are very good.

The women in this cast just don't really do it for me, except Bayer and Nasim Pedrad.
