So we are thinking they deployed specific nanobots in just their area to have the perception of a wasteland but everywhere else is fine? I can see that. They wouldve had to nuked the whole world for any of this to make sense.

Also I dont think nukes by themselves would be enough. Military and high ups would get early warning and get in their own bunker or patches of humanity where they didnt get hit. The nano cloud would have to keep killing patches.

My guess is that you don't need wholesale Armageddon, you need the right amount of electro magnetic pulse to start a chain reaction for the nanos? Underground the nanos already in cannot get that "message" I'll bet submarines also could survive it since it's the pulse that sends the signal that tells the little fellas to shut people down

The nanobots can be repurposed for lots of things, such as cleaning up the toxicity of the outside world that was nuked. My guess is the world was safe to go outside generations ago. I think you'll see that in season 4

I absolutely love the story (its not another medical drama, cop show or NCIS spinoff) and because of that I have overlooked some of the warts of the show but easily Top 10 Sci-Fi shows imo.
