That ending might have sealed the deal on one of the most re-watchable movies ever. I hear Morgan Freeman's voice saying "An poor ole Andy never made it out of that shite pipe".

Actually, he did. The scene of him finally escaping, taking the money and going around from bank to bank, leaving the note, and ending up on a beach in Mexico ? None of that happened.
Just like in Jacob's Ladder, Andy died, and never left his hell.
