re: Series that got terrible, yet you still watched until the end.

I think Dexter is the only show that truly got terrible and I watched until the end.
I guess HIMYM, too. HIMYM got a little worse in the last season or 2, but IMO not as bad as people made it out to be (until the finale, which I think was an embarrasment).
I typically just stop watching shows when I lose interest. Did it after 2 or 3 seasons of 6-Feet Under (which I heard has an amazing finale, but I was just too bored of that show to continue on). Did it with the office after 4-5 seasons. Did it for lost after 3-4 seasons. Did it for boardwalk empire after 4 seasons I think. Did it for the Killing after 2 seasons.

Dexter got truly awful.
SOA declined, got tired, etc., but was still pretty satisfying IMO.
Entourage and Californication similarly went downhill or just got old, but I found both entertaining all the way to the end (they were never works of art), so they're in a different category to me.

Dexter seems to be the popular answer. That last season was just so bad. Does Terra Nova count even though it only lasted one season? That one was more so bad it's awesome though

old school: Miami Vice
Another old school one is Xena: Warrior Princess. When Gabrielle got all tatted up was the signal of the end. I've never seen a show get so bizarre over night.

Sons of Anarchy personifies this thread.

Started off as a show about arse kicking, drug pushed, porn making bikers and turned into a show about Jax's bitchy whiney wife.

I can't really think of any. Once a show gets too stupid, alajones2 and I bail with a quickness. Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, CSI's, all dumped after a few seasons.
We did stick with Resurrection. Although that was only like 20 total episodes. And honestly, if we hadn't started watching Warehouse 13 at the beginning, we probably never would have gotten into it.
And I know this is going to get me some downvotes, but in all honesty, South Park might be falling into this category for me.

I think theres a difference between a show tanking in quality and just not being as good or fresh as it once was.
True Blood and Heroes are two that just completely tanked after exceptionally good starts.
Greys Anatomy was never that good and I got bored with it.
A good example was Rescue Me. Its not so much that it tanked, but I just got bored after the first 3 seasons. First season was freaking fantastic.

Well, Grey's and CSI probably just ran out of fresh material. DH just tanked after the tornado.

Dexter
Prison Break
The Office
How I Met Your Mother
Rescue Me
...
Come to think I of it it is a lot easier to think of shows that didn't tail off at the end.

The Wire
Friday Night Lights
For both series above, they just hit their peak too early and could not sustain the momentum. The acting remained strong but the writing just got bad.

I just started The Wire and finished Season 1 last night. When does it start to go downhill?

For me, it started trending down after Season 1 and it started to nosedive in Season 4. I am probably in the minority with that opinion since many on this board have proclaimed the series to be the GOAT. Perhaps my expectations were too high.

The Killing. 1st season was good.
And then it hit a brick wall really quickly.
