The Mummy Returns was a direct sequel to The Mummy and makes references back to the original film constantly.

The Exorcist III.....kind of.

It was set fifteen years after the original film and ignored the events of Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977).

William Peter Blatty lost his fight to use the book's title "Legion" for the film. Morgan Creek and Fox insisted on including the word Exorcist in the title.

Friday the 13th 2. No real relation to the original Friday the 13th.

I think it is a good thing that they ignored Transformers 2

Right, but it directly referenced I. II is the one that doesn't fit, even though in theory it was more "sequelly".

Halloween 3 is the answer and it was awful. had potential though, just horrible production IMO

I disagree somewhat. Jason came out of the water at the end of 1. While he was not the killer in 1, he was a storyline, he was the reason his mother killed and he "saw" her killed on the lake/beach and then rose from the water to get revenge

And I disagree with this somewhat.

Everything you've said is true and sort of what they tried to sell us on with the sequels...but lets be honest...Part 1 was a stand alone movie; Jason was a kid who DIED...mother took revenge; Jason coming out of the water was a dream the girl had at the end.

Part II has some continuity but it's fantastical premise (Jason comes back from the dead and apparently grows into a man in death all these years later) completely disregards what Part 1 established...that Jason was a long dead boy.
