I think that's why some didn't like it as much. They wanted just another war movie not a drama.
I love dramas so it wasn't an issue for me.
I couldn't agree more that without the character development in the first half the war scenes wouldn't have near as much impact.

You can establish characters without having to make your audience suffer through the longest and most mundane wedding scene in the history of film.

Sure, only I didn't find it mundane. I thought it was one of the best wedding sequences outside of The Godfather.

Agreed. Just watch the characters and you start identifying certain traits in each of them that will set the stage for the rest of the movie. It's not just a wedding scene.
